Description Fist up, I would like some constructive criticism please. Especially regarding composition and something about the spaceship in the foreground is really bugging me.

On a whim a few days ago I decided to look up a show called 'The Dreamstone'. Wound up hyped up on nostalgia and wanting to do some space art in the 80s airbrushed style. It was one of my favourite shows as a little kid (I was 5 when it was cancelled). It may have had something to do with wanting to become a sci-fi/fantasy artist. The mark of a good kids show is that you can watch is as an adult and still enjoy it. There will be Zordrak fan art at some point.

I like the space station too. It's a shame about the spaceship in the foreground though.

it has a different style, but it doesnΒ΄t look bad.
I like it, too. ^^

Try spending a little more time on the foreground..After all, that will probably be the first thing noticed by anyone who sees this piece. The spaceship looks too simple and cartoonish compared to the space station and the BG. Honestly, it looks like a different artist who drew the spaceship and another one drew the rest.

Just try to focus on the detail of the foregorund a bit more. The station in the BG looks more detailed because it is smaller and far away, and you can't really see any flaws. Look at some space concept art for inspiration. There are tons of tools on photoshop at your disposal (assuming that's what you used). Don't rely on the brush tool for your whole drawings.

However, I really like the planets and the BG and such. Good work on that.

My style is normally hugely variable. I will re-do the space ship and probably ditch the cartoony nature.

I ended up using 3 programs for it, P.S elements, Flash and something called Deep Paint.

Well the composition looks pretty good to me, it's simple yet great

And about the foreground.... mmmhh I don't really see what's so bugging... some colours are getting out the lines, it's all what i really notice and it still took me time to get it
Oh well also... I find the station in the background to be more detailled than the ship itself, just an impression but.... well I fail at doing constructive criticisms so i can't say more, I find it quite good

The space station in the background is more detailed than the little ship. I didn't realise my colouring was so messy

Constructive Crit ey?

Hrrmm.. Your lines are not very straight, you'd think a space cruiser which is made out of metalic sheets would have very straight edges/ geometrically curved edges. Also, your colouring is a tad messy, colours moving out of the lines here and there. I'd suggest to slow down a bit and makes sure your line arts, colouring and shading are tidy. Good luck for future works!

Yeah the space ship is a bit too roughly done. It'll be redone, probably ditching the catoony-ness of it. I think I'll redo it in another program.

would those be gas planets or Yog-Sothoth? They're too smooth to be normal planets.

The background could use a bit of work too but the spaceships are excellent.

The gas gaint is meant to be that smooth. That was how the gas planet looked in one of the ref pics I had. The moons probably do need a bit more texture.

What about the background do you think needs work?

I don't know. the stars don't seem luminous enough...

I found a pic of Neptune which suggests that gas planets look at least a little chaotic, due to convection etc.

Luminosity is easy enough to change.

Neptune does have some cloud banding but Uranus (or atleast the pictures I have of it) is dead smooth. I'll run some splatter brushes across the surface. Hopefully that'll make it look more like a real airbrush has been used.
