Dormammu was once a humanoid Sorceror who was from the Faltine Dimension. Both he and his sister, Umar, were banished from the Faltine Dimension and sought refuge in the Dark Dimension. Before long Dormammu managed to conquer the Dark Dimension and traded his original body for that of current one, composed of Mystical energy.

well i read that Dormammu and his ho of a sister Umar were from the faltine dimension, spawned from Sinifer. they were always like that, flaming and all, but got banished cause they craved physic matter and killed their pops by turining him into dead matter. along the way they came into the dark dimsneion and u know. also umar reason she is human is cause she and orini mated and she gave birth to clea.
