Yes my characters will eventually have ref sheets. I will most likely put some up at the end of the first chapter but I might decide to do some sooner. It depends.

do draw linart first then colour and shade, then take the lines away? or free hand it?

I prefer free hand I always mess up with lineart when trying not to use it XD

yeah I do better drawing the shape then filling it in on a different layer so that I sort of have a lineart to refer back to
