Description "Sidqi!" the king nudged his son off his chest and rolled over as his sister stormed down the path toward them.

"Sauda, what are you doing out by the border?" he laughed, looking up at her from the ground. She snarled, and the cub against his belly recoiled from her.

"Anaya told me that you sold my daughters to Queen Uru of the Ndona. You think my daughters will be sold like a new kill? They are daughters of the Kusini, born to be huntresses and rulers, not consorts to pathetic kings."

"Rulers? Dear Sauda, even Diku is too old to be Zamr's queen. He will wed outside the Pride to bring in new alliances. The best they could hope for is to be members of the new Queen's hunting party," Sidqi stood, shaking the dust from his mane and standing over his cub as he met his sister's irate gaze. "You are a Princess by benefit of my being King. Your daughters will never rule my Pride, and so I have betrothed Sarabi to the Crown Prince Mufasa, and Naanda to Prince Taka. Perhaps Diku and Dwala will find mates among the Ndona as well."

"Betrothals can be broken," Sauda spat, claws extending. Sidqi smiled down at her, tilting his head to the side.

"Of course, but if Sarabi and Naanda chose to shame the Kusini by breaking good betrothals to a pride we need to strengthen our alliance with, I doubt the lionesses will be pleased. Perhaps they will even support me when I exile them from my lands."

"You can't do that."

"Our father nearly caused a war between the Pridelands and Southernlands. The rift must be repaired before it breaks altogether. If your daughters cause a war, why should the lionesses fight for them? Certainly Uru will be displeased, but her sons are young and strong, she can find them new mates and when our lake goes dry in the worst of the dry season, why should she let us drink from their river when we've already broken our word?" Sidqi nudged his son ahead of him, moving them away from the furious lioness. "Think on it, Sauda. Naanda and Sarabi have three days to give their decision."

The royal bastard, I hope Sauda ends up getting even with him before she dies.

To be fair, she brought this upon herself. If she hadn't tried to scare away his betrothed they might have had a cub sooner and he would have made a good match.

And if she hadn't tried to steal his throne he wouldn't have agreed with Uru without consulting her cubs.

She does try, though. She has another cub, but it's a male this time, and she all but abandons him. Afterward her mate has nothing to do with her.

I thought his wife was unable to bear cubs?

But it seems odd given how it sounds like females are more wanted than males. If so...why was he made King and not Sauda?

She had Zamr, but she's very weak compared to a lioness of his pride. She's a thin, golden creature from a desert pride.

Sauda <-- check out her bio, their mother (the queen) died birthing them.

The same pride that Ahadi hails from? Since it seems that golden furred lions came from that place (starting with Zhenga and contributing to the main golden males of the canon/semi-canon cast).

I've got a Map  here if you wanna take a look.

There are two main groups of lions, one in the North, which have long fur and dark coats, and one in the South (Desert Lions Profile ), which have sand-colored fur and short manes. They're divided by mountains.

The gold comes from the desert lions, Zhenga's mother had it, and so did many of the lions they bred with, down to Ahadi and his sisters. Thanks to their shared ancestor, Ahadi and Uru's match brings the color to the forefront again.

I didn't think of having his mate come from Ahadi's former pride. It's an interesting idea, though. I do have a lioness without a backstory in that lineage. That pride is fun XD

And the oasis is the place where Simba stayed during his exile, right? And I like how you refer colored paws as being like gloves, it's quite fitting

If you don't have much for his wife, perhaps you can have that lioness be Zamr's mother. But if Ahadi and Uru were not distantly related, then would there have been a chance that Mufasa would have also been dark of pelt?

I blame AnnMy for being a slight genetics nut (kind of trying to see if I could use cat genetics to explain some of TLK stuff...some luck, but not much promise).

Would gold be considered a recessive gene in your TLK world? Kind of like what is going on with your Norse lions (which is cool BTW, I love Norse mythology ).

Yes, that is Simba's oasis. There are a lot of others like it, as the desert is vast, but that's the closest to the Pridelands. He's very lucky he ran into it.

If Uru had taken most any male in the South as a mate, there's a chance the cubs might have been gold. Ahadi showed it so strongly, though, it helped bring it out.

Mufasa is the first golden king since Tau  (his greatx3 grandfather). Sarabi has some in her ancestry, explaining Simba. Nala's father is also Ahadi's son, and Kovu has Diku and Penda's mate.

My main colors are red (very rare), gold (and sandy colors), and brown (from Khari's shade to Sarafina's). Red is next to never seen outside of Northern royalty, gold and it's sister-colors are recessive, and brown is the main shade. The lions of the pridelands are so mixed between the main prides that they all have some desert blood in them. Diku got her sandy color from them too.

There are also lions with Sade's shade, but most of them are coastal lions, from across the Great Desert, and it's near-impossible to cross the desert.

Lions are hard because they're all a tawny color in nature and have similar eyes, I think. I did use genetics for my eye colors.

A mixed gene pool is always a good thing though, not only does it make things colorful, but you also can get interesting traits...but what about orange like Zuri?

My point exactly, heck you can't really tell one lioness from another unless they have a very obvious feature. I know researchers record lions using their freckles, but that is not quite possible in this world.

There is one plus side to using natural lion genetics...you can use the erythristic gene. It is a 'red' gene (think of a dark red leopard), but on lions it actually turns them a vibrant gold...see?

I think this is a male version: terrydarc.files.wordpress.com/…

Not sure how common it is, but I use that to explain all the golden clones...white lions are actually nice to see too.

Zuri gets her color from Scar (and Ahadi). Scar's red (from Mohatu) combined with his father's (and Zuri's mother's) gold.

Now that lioness is gorgeous, the red stands out so well next to the tawny one next to her.. If you hang around a couple minutes, I'm about to post Mohatu's dad. He's where the red in the line comes from. For white, I have Mheetu , but Adeola , Sade , Malika, and Sifa come close.

Wait...so lions like Malika, Sarafina, and Nala would be considered white lions even though they are cream/tawny in color?

Sarafina and Nala are brown, but Malika is close to a white lion. One of her daughters actually is a white lion, thanks to her father.

I must ask...how are white lions perceived in your TLK world?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UncannyCat In reply to KalahariMeerkatfan [2016-12-09 01:42:54 +0000 UTC]

Well, there are two types of lions that are white. Actual white lions and desert spirits. The spirits are generally believed to be a myth by the lions of the lands between the desert and the mountains.

In the desert these spirits are very real and can be deadly. They tend to be wary of white lions and most of the actual lions move into the pridelands/etc or become desert rogues.

In the mountains, white sabre teeth are common, and it's not unheard of for them to abandon white cubs out of fear of them.

In the grasslands, they're generally just accepted as common lions.
