Description
In response to the RMS Gigantic being built, the Cunard line wanted their own five-funneled ocean liner to be built to compete with the White Star Line. In 1916, they commissioned the building of the RMS Mesopotamia, an ocean liner with a length of 956 feet, and an estimated tonnage of 56,000. The ship would be built with speed in mind, with an estimated top speed of 27 knots, with an interior as equally lavish as the RMS Gigantic. The ship would survive service in both world wars as a troopship, and would continue passenger service until 1956, when she was no longer able to continue service due to age and due to the extensive corrosion of the vessel. The estimated cost of repairs would exceed the cost of a new vessel, so she would be scrapped in 1956.
