Ya i heard about it but never used it... I know there is also "PaintShop Pro" wich is free and has some nice abilities...

i dont know what to say. Just start from the character that you think is the easiest. In the characters, the eyes and hair is the main part, so concentrate on the most. In the hair, try to add different shades. And same with the eyes. I guess thats a start.......
