Description
'Nishki, my strong young sapling, do not be afraid to ask for help. This is a very troubling journey that you are undertaking.
Your instincts are correct; there are many a bad thing in this forest. Travel the river path but stay alert. It is by no means safer.'
Listening to Mother Aga's calming words, Nishki opened his eyes and looked back to the forest with understanding. His lip curled as he mentally prepared himself for the hard journey ahead of him. If Mother Aga believed in him and had chosen him, then he would do his best to see this task through. Nudging the blind dire who still leaned against his hind leg, Nishki huffed, "We're taking the river."
Got trembled against Nishki's hind leg, "What of the birds?"
Curling his lip in their direction, he snarled, "If they are stupid enough to attack, then they will meet my fangs." Still cautious for his handler's sake, Nishki pushed by the blind dire stepping towards the opening to the river. He kept his eyes aimed on the birds, watching their every moment. Behind him, he could hear his handler click his tongue to help direct the other dire to follow.
They traveled in relative silence, minus the clicks from his handler to keep Got on track. Nishki's ear fell back as they walked past the birds who watched them with a level of intelligence that set his nerves on edge. His ears fell back as his lip curled, snarling at the birds. The babbling of the river filled the tension as Nishki came to a halt. Got stumbled into Nishki's hind leg with a yelp and a whimper. His handler tutted at Nishki but quickly soothed Got's nerves. He could feel the blind dire tremble behind him, but his focus was on the birds that perched across the river.
Nishki sidestepped, putting himself in front of the blind dire, letting Got lean against him as his head lowered with his tongue poked out. Nishki's snarl grew as he watched the birds as they opened their wings and flew over head. His jaw clenched on the stem of the lantern before easing up, fearful to hurt Mother Aga's gift. The crows cawed overhead as they grew increasingly closer. His gaze watched them as they came to land on a fallen tree making a bridge over the river.
His mane bristled as the daring bird hopped closer towards him. Nishki could feel his handler's grip tighten in his mane as he stood his ground, snarling at the birds. Got's trembling was getting worse with the agitation coming off Nishki. He stared down at the large bird, thinking quickly, 'Mother Aga, what nightmares await me in these woods if these are to be the guardians at the gate.'
Keeping a firm grip on the lantern, he turned his head, a growl rumbling in his throat of warning, “We're moving on Got. Step with me and stay away by the trees.”
Got whimpered a response, as he carefully stepped forward, Nishki following close to him. These birds were a waste of his precious time. If Mother Aga worried of the darkness in these woods, then he wanted to spend as little time as possible here. His handler shifted over his back, attempting to soothe Got as they made their way past the crows, who cawed out behind them. His handler didn't shift back to remain on his back but saddled over to Got's back, speaking gently to try and calm the nervous dire.
“The birds are behind us. We will finish this task and be gone from these woods.” Nishki snapped over to Got in an attempt boost his resolve.
