This is so interesting because it reminds me that in ancient China(Jin Dynasty as a matter of fact),a low-intelligence emperor said that:"If the people didn't have rice, why didn't they eat porridge with meat?"He really didn't understand the difficulties faced by the peasants at that time, and the kingdom was destroyed by some Huns in just a few years.
By the way,I'm Chinese and I really hope you guys can pay a visit to China and see her beauty.Nice to meet you!

LadySolonna [2018-02-08 20:58:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm guessing this was a reference to "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche" allso commonly translated as Let them eat cake byΒ  Queen Marie Antoinette

it was supposedly spoken by "a great princess" upon learning that the peasants had no bread. Since brioche was a luxury bread enriched with butter and eggs, the quote would reflect the princess's disregard for the peasants, or her poor understanding of their situation.

ZanarNaryon In reply to Shenronn [2018-01-09 13:23:58 +0000 UTC]

A famous quote from the French Revolution of a pampered noble, identity not important, saying that if the people didn't have bread, why didn't they eat cake? It's unclear wether or not Twilight meant it as a joke (If hay is food or the commoners, floral spray is presumably more exclusive for the upper class) or if she was legitimately confused, as she's lived a pretty upper class life herself.Β

Β Marie Antoinette and her famous quote: "Let them eat cake", which is propably fake.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 3

SorenMaelstrom In reply to LordStalinV2 [2017-07-15 08:18:11 +0000 UTC]

It is not fake. But the word "cake" had another meaning back then. Maybe some of you know the meaning of a "caked up Fireplace" or remember the Game Portal about "cake".
The hard to remove Sud in a Fireplace or the remnants of a Bonfire are often called "Cake", because of the look of white Frosting on Top of it and the Layering.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 3

hobbesismygod In reply to SorenMaelstrom [2018-09-04 21:04:48 +0000 UTC]

You can stop wandering about the word "cake", cause that's just bad english translation. The real quote (that might be fake) says "bricoche", wich is a tasty and expensive type of bread.

JoulesInTheMoon In reply to LordStalinV2 [2017-06-26 03:55:05 +0000 UTC]

It was actually "why don't they eat cake?"
She saw some poor, hungry people and asked why they were hungry, to which the guard or whatever replied "madam, there is no bread"
It's THE prime example of a leader being out of touch with the people (she obviously didn't know that cake cost a lot more than bread).

A "great princess" according to Rousseau, who wrote down that story a few years before poor Marie Antoinette arrived in France. Β The actual identity of the princess has never been established, if it was anything other than a manufactured anecdote to illustrate a point about the unexpected consequences of regime regulation of bakeries in the capital. Β The guesses I've seen include a queen from the 17th century, and one of Louis XV's mistresses, Β perhaps Madame Pompadour.Β

To everyone that is confused about the Joke

"if it were not for hay, let them eat floral spray"
this joke actually took some research by me and another guy to fully get the joke
and was translated poorly from Japanese
it's 2 jokes in one, one of which is very dark
1. a Floral Spray is a Funeral Bouquet [Dark part of Joke]
2. "let them eat cake" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_them…
a floral bouquet costs more than a similar portion of hay
same as cake costs more than bread

it should be read
"if they can't eat hay, they'll enjoy their funeral bouquet"
Kind of Dark for a Joke
you now understand why Fluttershy and Applejack are mad about the joke
