You know, I often think that the real reason Spike is a dog in the human world is because there's already a human counterpart of him there, and the mirror's just trying to not cause confusion. It's possible too, since there's no counterpart to Twilight, or Sunset, etc. and the mirror gave Twilight clothes as well. So yeah, the question would be where the human Spike is.
I'm also willing to wager should any of the main cast try to cross over, they'd be turned into animals by the mirror too so as to not arouse suspicion.
