It may be just me and my overly critical eye, but the left "wall" really seems to flatten the image. The right wall is in perspective so it gives a sense of depth. The left wall though, does not provide the eye with any spacial information. I know the angle of the scene would make that wall accurate physically, but compositionally it is distracting. But as always you've done a great job capturing the character of your... character and the rock texture is exceptional. Thanks for sharing!

Oh! Poor sheep. ;_; I've seen many a sheep sheared in real life, but I can't say whether or not that affects my perception of your sheep, somehow. The fact that it's Gearworld does make me fear for it regardless, alas.
I love that you can feel that it's terrified without its having any cartoony, exaggerated features, apart from the pose. Great job with the texture of the wool, too.
I think that the original sketch has more sheer (argh shear puns) "creep" factor because of the starkness, but the painting is more... erm... firmly surreal?

Poo tortured sheep! I'm suffering with him, what a nightmare! I hope he really get's more shadows to hide him, perhaps then the scissors won't see him!

Don't rely on black shadows to do the work... black (especially with white to tint the highlights) usually just flattens things out, instead of setting them back. Try a warm/cool contrast for the shadows and see if that works.

Generally I use a combination of paynes grey and raw umber for darks, yes.

It reminds me of a Gary Larson cartoon. 'The Golden Arches got me!!'
(maybe instead of pushing the sheep into the background, you could pull the scissors out? Or maybe in another version, you could paint the sheep trying to go incognito?)

I think the sheepy lost a little bit of vitality from the sketchy, s/he looks stiffer. Maybe that's what's throwing you?

Maybe it's just me, but could it be that what you're missing is the sheep's harmonica?

Love the image, but I agree it doesn't quite feel like it is sitting in that space. You may look at the highlights instead of the shadows? Still very cute!

I think the light looks good like it is. It looks like he was trying to hide and just got found out. ^^
But, you know, that's just me.

What a creative compisition. I love the earth tones you got in there for a farm yard animal and love how he is sitting. The expression is great. I woud just around his back left belly part darken the back that is in there slightly and then highlight the belly, the front legs and the rear leg on the right. Maybe his nose a little more and the edge highlight on his right ear and round off the top a little that would make it pop. But over all what a great fun image. - Linda

I agree, at some point the sheep lost the horror and ended up looking like one of those devotional paintings of Mary... Like maybe Fra Angelico's _Annunciation_. Something about the ears, too....

It's really wonderful to see a darker piece from you. You have such an affinity for the cheery, funny, cartoonish style, but ones like this will always be my favorites of yours. This one is all about texture - I like the sketch, but I think the finished piece has so much more depth and realness, whether or not the feeling you wanted to come through actually did.

The face in the sketch somehow looks more scared... almost tearful, actually... if that helps at all
I love the textures you've used though, and the scissors really stand out against it all. Really nice. Missing your interesting back stories though...

i don't know why, but the original that became this and this, look sooo different. I mean their the same thing, but i guess it's just the difference of if it has color or not that just gives them a different feel... weird. Wonderful work on both though
