Description Based on the famous Masquerade Ball of Venice.
I'm not too pleased with this, I was getting frustrated a couple of hours into it... plus the moon looks silly.

Acrylic on canvas board.

Well, I do know what you mean. It looks unfinished to me, but I love the composition and the idea. I wouldn't give up on it.

I love the use of color and texture, my only quibble is maybe to add a bit more blue or green into the mask to make it more consistant.

Do not draw the moon borderlines.. . .. ... ..colour it all light, so you can only see a bright figure of the moon,
it should not look silly to you anymore ah and plus, how often have you seen the moon in such a shape,
if it is like that its thinner but if you wish for the moon to look "thicker" like in your picture then it is shaped more like the letter D .
But generally, i think this painting is beautiful, the expression of the mysterious woman is wonderful. . .

Thanks for your comment, and advice! I shall take that into account next time I paint the moon and after a bit of practice I'll probably change this moon.

It's got a very surreal feel to it, again, I would make this smaller in full view, the side scrolling does hinder the enjoyment of viewing.

I really like the background it looks like sky and also sea near the bottom. It looks like there are mountains hiding in there as well - very vague and swirly and beautiful It looks like its shimmering. It kindof reminds me of the background in Van Gogh's "Starry night", only I like yours better!

Thanks for such a lovely comment and the relation to Van Gogh's work!

I agree that the moon looks silly but it's ok, because the rest is quite good. far better than what I could do.

If i may be so bold as to criticise, I think that the texturing needs to be more consistent. The sky/face are both good, but then you've got the high detail bits like the mask, which are also good, but they don't seem to fit with the textury bits. I think if you used the same shadowing on them as on the rest then it might help. and the big black area seems to plain. if it was done in a texture like the sky, with v dark greys, perhaps?
Sorry for criticising, i feel horrible now. I am just trying to help. don't take my criticism too seriously, I know nothing about art.

Firstly, thanks a bunch for the comment

I agree, I feel that the vast amounts of one colour (such as the black) does make the painting look quite flat. I think I'll try adding in a bit more texture and particually shadow to give everything a bit more depth.
No no, it's great to get constructive criticism because I can now improve on my technique, I am an art student after all.
