This is an oyster mermaid.I had read a medieval story about pearls and oysters in a bestiary.
In that story, the oysters rise to the surface of the ocean and open their shell to catch the moonlight, then close their shells and return to the bottom of the ocean. After some time, the trapped moonlight turns into pearls.
In my mind, this mermaid is the queen of the molluscs, she has her shell closed most of the time, so she cannot see anything.
Her subdits (mollusk mermaids) help her to rise to the surface of the ocean, then she opens her shell, shows her face, catches the moonlight, and closes her shell again.
This happens every full moon
