Yes, it's that time of year folks where once again I take it upon myself to completely re-model my stargate, never being quite happy with the last one!
Differences with this new one?...

> Made from scracth to be completely interchangeable between the SGC gate and the Atlantis gate, with as few alterations as possible (i.e.: chevron textures & inner glyph ring)
> Decided to rebuild it all to make an overall cleaner model. I guess you wont notice much difference when it's completed, but the otehr one had polygons that really did go off at tangents! (Damn booleans!) Now this is a perfect clean model in comparison and I will show the diff when completed.
> Where-ever possible everything is more detailed. EG: everything has a chamfer to some degree to smooth off the harsh edges.
> All details are modeled up from one object. Note the close up of gate model 4 in my gallery and ull see the iner track is two seperate pieces for the square diamonds things and the engraving oval part (you should know what i mean!) - The new version is all extruded, beveled and modeled directly from on initial tube.
> There are other chnages, all too tedious to mention but too important to ignore.

PLEASE VIEW AT FULL RESOLUTION AND COMMENT ON HOW YOU THINK THINGS ARE GOING SO FAR (FOR BETETR OR WORSE BEFORE I COMPLETE!!)

Nice work on all those details, the software you're using must have a nice boolean engine (the one in XSI is giving me hard time most of the times )

Amazing detail. How do you do the repettive detail all around the gate and keep it lookin the same?

Regarding the square diamond tracks... they took about 1 and a bit hours wok of constant clickign on the faces, extruding then, then pulling the front 4 corners of that extruded square together and welding then into a single point to get the traingular look. Boy I went through some cups of coffee doing that!
The Goa'uld oval lines all around the outer portion of the gate were a single strip. I created one part between the two |.'.| (if u can visulise that crude example)..., copied and pasted it 30 times. made them all attatch together in the one mesh and used soemthnig called "power booleans" which cleans up much better than the standrd max one and then booleaned it out using "cookie cut" so rather than create an indent, it creates the spline shape into where it meets the main gate mesh. Avoids me problems that way. Then selected the faces that it had craeted for me, and extruded them back by 0.08 max units Oh, and did it a further 8 times for the rest of the gate

I know what you mean about the finer detail, that is what sell your model!! But its also what kills you, coz it is such a tedious job!! You chevron locker things seem a bit flat, but otherwise looking good!!

yea again with the shading of the light I'm using, it doesnt define the difference between angled surfaces very well, but does give a very nice overall render and picks out the inset details. 50/50 i suppose with whatever you use! Again I'll post a wireframe overlay of other renderings, as it isn't as flat as it looks, but yes admitidly, it does right now! cross your fingers
