Description So, I drew Asuna again and drew a circle background again lol..

This is the second marker practice piece I did and decided to go without a template and try something that's more suited to my style. My 24 set of Prismacolors didn't come with skin tones or anything near what I needed so I went out and bought 5 Copics to make up for it. Which of course then, I fell absolutely in loooove with the Copics and decided to explore them more (So I'm slowly building my collection~!)

I'm honestly soo pleased with how this came out. I was working with a pretty limited palette but got to learn a lot about how the different types of markers blend (and believe me..it is very different between them) and how to work with their given colors. It was really a lot of fun!

I chose Asuna because she's my go-to when I feel out of practice or don't really feel motivated. I'm not sure why but I memorized her design at some point so now whenever I'm just doodling, it'll usually turn into Asuna xD

So yeah! I love this piece for my second marker drawing and can't wait to use them more!! Oh! And I get extra credit for it too

Her name is Asuna and she's from the manga/anime series Sword Art Online. She's one of the main characters and is totally awesome

I'm confused with what is Sword Art Online about.
Is it basically inception?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vaalkaaren In reply to ShadowSpyProductions [2016-12-09 18:34:43 +0000 UTC]

So basically, a VR game comes out that is played by wearing a helmet called NerveGear that completely immerses players in a game with their actual body basically just left to sleep. Everyone is excited for the game so it's one of those situations where it sells out immediately and all that.

Well, after logging in, players find that they can't log out and then later learn that they're trapped in the game until they can defeat all 100 floors of the game. The game (Sword Art Online) is a fantasy MMORPG and as you could guess, each floor is harder than the previous one. Oh, and also, players who die in game die in real life as well. And if the helmet is removed from the player's body irl, they die as well. So then the story follows Kirito and Asuna as they navigate the world and try to free everyone

I know only vaguely of Inception so I can't attest to similarities but yeah, that's what SAO is hahah

Wow, throw Morpheus from the Matrix and it will be complete.
"Take the Red pill or the Blue pill, Mr. Anderson."

It's always delightful to have two protagonists fighting for the underdog.
I just had a younger cousin who loves Sword Art Online (and also DeathNote) but I knew little about either.

Though what doesn't make sense was what the creators of "NerveGear" were trying to accomplish.  Global domination of gamers?

Looks amazing! I love the way you've used the skin tones.
Which skin tone Copics did you pick up?

Vaalkaaren In reply to justD3F [2016-12-09 19:22:35 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply!

So basically I went out and bought these:

 E00 Cotton Pearl
 E02 Fruit Pink
 E11 Barley Beige
 R02 Flesh
 BV00 Mauve Shadow

And then I just worked pretty much in that order, however I found that several years ago I had apparently bought E000 Pale Fruit Pink as well so I used that to mark the highlighted places (nose, cheeks, etc.) but it is sort of hard to see in the photo. My favorite part of the skin, though, was adding the BV00 because as soon as I added it, it just seemed to make it look so much more dynamic

Sounds like you've been using copics for a while.
I wrote down all of them, I really need more skin tones.

Vaalkaaren In reply to justD3F [2016-12-10 02:35:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh heavens no haha. I bought like 6 probably 5 years ago and they were just super random colors. I had no idea what I was doing. This was my first Copic drawing!

Ah yeah I need more too. Mine are really limited. I need darker tones definitely.

Hazelnut (E23) is one I like to use and Cocoa Brown (E74).
I'm looking for good colors for tan and olive skin.

I find that she was a great character, but her potential was wasted by a sexist author

Ah, I guess that's one way to look at it. I never read the manga (could never find it), but I wish they would've included her more in the series.

What are your thoughts on that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vaalkaaren In reply to bruiser128 [2016-12-10 03:59:35 +0000 UTC]

I never got the impression that the author was sexist and going purely from what I saw in the anime alone, I don't think I would call him that. Perhaps he lives his personal life in such a way but I never got that from the series. I thought Asuna was strong but her weaknesses were realistic.

Girls relying on the unbeatable protagonist to fix their problems
without assisting in any problem.

Although it was is mainly the second Story Arc that confirmed my
feelings about leaving the series.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vaalkaaren In reply to bruiser128 [2016-12-10 17:07:56 +0000 UTC]

Asuna assisted, but there is charm to the idea of the protagonist saving the girl. She didn't sit around and do nothing but when she was weak, he was there to help her. And vice versa. As far as the second series goes, the situation she was in was a classic story where she was the damsel in distress and needed her knight in shining armor to save her. I find nothing wrong with it. It's what fairy tales that kids grow up with are made of.

If it's not your cup of tea, then that's perfectly okay. But I don't personally believe the author was being sexist by portraying Asuna as a more secondary character and Kirito as the protagonist. I wish she would've been included more but just because she wasn't doesn't mean the author was being sexist. Like I said before, perhaps he lives his life in a different way and is actually sexist, but from the story alone, I never got that feeling.

So those are my opinions. Thanks for asking

I guess it was just all the sexual undertones and an absoLUTELY
disgusting villain that drove me from it.

I will agree that the series would have benefitted by the side characters
making a bigger contribution to the plot and conflicts at play.

Vaalkaaren In reply to bruiser128 [2016-12-10 18:00:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes, well I didn't like the villain in the second arc either. I felt it was unnecessary, mostly at the end when it escalated. It could've been handled better for sure and I think that's probably why Alfheim didn't impress me a ton. It could've done really well but they made key mistakes and it kinda flopped for me.

I recently categorized anime like this as examples where the world
and lore is more interesting than the actual story.

Vaalkaaren In reply to bruiser128 [2016-12-10 18:24:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I would say the same. I would've been totally cool if they had gone into the world more. Especially Alfheim, because if I recall, they added Norse mythology into it which gave it an even richer history that would've been awesome if it had been explored more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bruiser128 In reply to Vaalkaaren [2016-12-10 18:47:02 +0000 UTC]

That was Germanic mythology actually. But your right that
there was much to explore in that world.

Although I would give an arm to see a series with a setting
like this one: althistory.wikia.com/wiki/Yell…

Vaalkaaren In reply to bruiser128 [2016-12-10 18:48:50 +0000 UTC]

Ah, they included Freja and other similar characters so actually Norse is correct But Germanic and Norse mythology share a lot.

Ah, that would be a cool setting

I figured it would be a cool concept to have Metahumans being
created by the very thing that brought about the next ice age.
