Description I have been coming across these crosses quite often in this region. Funny enough I have never seem crosses like these in/near my hometown. I always wondered why these crosses were placed, and when we went on our little trip today, I finally found an explanation. As the title says, this is an conciliation cross which had been set up in the 14th century on a murder site. On the information board I read, that the cross cannot be associated to an specific event anymore, but they said that it was a tradition that the murderer had to make a cross and set it up on the very site of the murder as a symbol for conciliation. They also wrote that this specific cross had been hit by a car in the 1950s and had to be moved to another place where it still can be seen nowadays (where it actually is the first step of various info points of the local hiking trail).
Legend has it that displacing a conciliation cross brings bad luck. As we didn't move the cross, I think we're safe

That is a very interesting tradition that I have never heard of before. Is it just German? That is kind of eerie in a way. I have seen crosses on battlefields- where as they used to leave trophies, but never this. In America, if someone has a fatal accident somewhere along a road -usually when they crash into a telephone post, people will leave some crosses and objects- but they tend not to be permanent like this.

Yeah, I thought that this would be interesting for you.
According to wikipedia it is a tradition in western and central Europe, and it ist not only limited to murder sites, but also sites of accidents etc. But as I said, I have never heard about this before nor can I remember having seen a conciliation cross before. We do have a similar cross in the village where I live in, but there is no information board. I could probably ask someone but I keep forgetting about it.
You can find wood crosses all over the streets here. This tradition is rather new. The crosses are usually permanent though, they have names and dates on it, and people light candles and put flowers next to the cross.

Some of those wooden crosses sound like shrine sites. I saw the other pic with the tree reef. I have heard of the Irminsul before, and I sense it is similar to Irish Dallan stones, or indian lingam stones. Churches are, in some ways, the sacred groves of old.

I thought you may have heard about it.
This Queste is specific to the village, and for the past two years I have been planning to go there on Pentecost when they reniew the wreath on the birch. It's their most famous tradition.

Yes, birch is held sacred all through out Europe. The Irish druids used its bark- and so have I in my projects. It has to do with death and ressurrection.

Which reminds me that I still haven't tried to paint on birch bark ...

You have to make sure it is flat and prepared first.

I have seen paintings on bark in Russia. It seemed they used the fine paperlike layer only. I have wanted to work with that ever since.

I think so. That's why I didn't have the heart as of yet.
