I was going to write a little vignette here, but it grew to long. I will post it separately, with a link back to you.
As promised, here it is...
A New BargainEach year, during Lent, one of the neighboring villages would send a sacrifice to me, in order to save them from my depredations. Right on schedule, I sensed this year's offering approach.
The young woman was let into my abode, dressed in the traditional garb. She looked down as I approached.
"Do you know why you are here?"
"Yes, to save my village from the beast that dwells within these walls."
"Am I as evil as all that?"
She looked down, and whispered, "I would not know."
With my sensitive hearing, I heard her words.
"Come, my child. Let us get away from the drafty doorway."
We walked into the room that I customarily used for these ritual feedings, one that was easily cleaned should the need arise. She must have sensed the meaning of the room, as she kneeled, as if to pay homage to me, before the ritual began.
I read out the contract from the Book of Life, slowly closed it, and bade her rise. She did so, and looked directly into my eyes.
