Or Mattphantom. Whatever spelling you prefer, as long it describes a surface that isn't shiny. Like this guy.
I like the common fan interpretations of Mettaton before he became a robot, they're really cute, but I personally think the body Alphys made is what he wanted to look like, not what he looked like; as most of the fanart floating around shows ghost Mettaton being pink, having eyelashes, and bangs covering one eye. Much like the robot.
Alphys loves anime, so I'm sure the appearance of Mettaton's body was based on anime and not Mattephantom's appearance. After all, if Mattephantom looked equally fabulous, why would he even need a body to fulfill his dreams of becoming famous. Wouldn't they accept a ghost on stage in the monster world? Though, his obsession with legs like a Disney fish princess might be the only reason he wanted a body. You can't dance on a stage without legs.
What I'm trying to say is that we're not always born with an appearance matching our personality. Rarely. Mettaton could've been a rag of a ghost, who surrounded himself with pink to make up for it. And considering how close he and Napstablook once were, I'd imagine only an unusually different-looking Mettaton breaking his heartfelt promise towards his best friend for that attractive anime body he's been secretly craving for, and with it, a real chance to become the celebrity his scraggy-looking butt dreamed of for all these years.
Spoilers, I base all of this on nothing.

It would be confusing if all of their names were Blook; especially when considering Mettaton used to call Napstablook "Blooky", you'd think the name belongs to just him.

But if it is their last name, then is the name "Napstablook" perhaps just an online username and not his real name; since his family title is intergrated in his first name? Just why is just Napstablook called "Blooky" if all those ghosts are named Blook?
I'd think, if it's a family name, Mettaton would then be called "Mettaton Blook", not "Mettablook". Or in my case it would be "Mattephantom Blook". But honestly, with all the hints and lack there of you can go both ways. But I'm going to stick with the possibility Napstablook is a false name.

Interesting interpretation. Though, I'd like to point out, in the case of trans individuals, even if they are extremely attractive, they don't feel comfortable as the sex they were born in. Being a ghost means lacking a physical form (without curves, textures, etc.), which could be the thing MTT longed for. Actually, IDK if ghosts look different from each other at all - the only ghosts in the game were Napstablook, MTT, and Angry Dummy, and only Napstablook was shown in ghost form. But that aside, I also like this version of MTT. I get really uncomfortable seeing glorified versions of purposefully-designed characters (e.g. really slim Alphys or Toriel).

Personally I don't see any reasons ghosts should look like anything but ghosts. Napstablook doesn't have hair or eyelashes or teeth, he isn't any color but white. I honestly think ghost Mettaton would look identical to Napstablook.

I like this idea more than the whole transitioning theory whick always left me with more confused, as does a lot of undertale fanon on tumblr.
I know the whole ghosts being genderless thing or whatever, but if metatton was a "female" ghost Β then why did Alphys made her a male body? Orrr if mettaton was just a guy who wanted to be female, why didn't alphys made him a female body and was referred as a she instead?Β

i figure mettaton is implied in the journals to be trans. so his ghost would probably be that of a trans guy who died before transitioning (or at least thats how i think of it) and this gives a chance for the perfect corporeal body for him in the afterlife.

I still find the general "trans" view on this character confusing for the questions above. If Metatton was a trans guy, why did Alphys made him an androgynous male body (Metatton is referred as a "he" throughout the game) instead of an entirely female one, or viceversa.
Vampiremeerkat's version and the "we're not always born with an appearance matching our personality" idea is more appealing to me regadless of implications. There's something about a very homely but flamboyant ghost reinventing himself as an anime prettyboy robot celebrity and trying to do away with his past (his key being thrown in the garbage) that I find interesting.
While there's a lot of implying with Metatton's past. I like that the UT crew so far has left it ambiguous enough to let fans come with their own versions.

yes. he seems to be more so implied as trans or a metta-phor for being trans imo, but any interpretation is as valid as any other.
