This is Madeline, who goes to an all-girl school. Students at the school believe she has dark powers or is cursed, having grown up in a family that is said to delve into the occult. It doesn't help that they live near a forest and keep to themselves, far from the more lively town around. Her parents are rarely seen, the mother always wearing a dark veil over her head, as well as sunglasses.

She doesn't speak to anyone at school, and is usually on her own reading books and not bothering anyone. Even though she is sometimes bullied or made fun of, she doesn't retaliate. She has good grades and is a skilled writer with a vivid imagination, although sometimes the stories she tells of are quite morbid.
