Pokedex Entry: Mega Astraloid use the rings of energy around it to absorb sunlight. The harsher the sunlight is, the more and the faster the energy flows through its body, powering him up tremendously. At one point, the rings' light is so intense that they can blind you if you look directly at them.

This is the technique I use to make my sprites. As for shading, be consistent in your light source and study existing sprites for an idea of for example, how dark a shade should be, and how you should apply it.
