Description The year is 2500 A.D.

The blood of humans and youkai is almost completely integrated. IN fact the full blood youkai died out almost 600 years ago, taking with them the ability to transform into the great beast Gods that ruled the lands of the earth. Many attempts have been made to recapture this lost power through cloning and genetic engineering, but with no gentic map from a full blood youkai all attempts failed.

Until now...

Pairings: Sessh/Rin, Inuyasha/Kagome, Miroku/Sango

They were coming closer.

Small, strong arms wrapped tightly around her neck, holding on for dear life as she ran. She thanked god that her genes and her training gave her the capacity to sprint non-stop through the space station all the while carrying her little brother on her back, and her pet Kirara in her arms.

Straight down the hallway she could see the lineup of people waiting to board the space station’s escape pods. When she reached the back of the line she set her brother down in the line for pod “M-105”. Carefully Sango handed Kirara into Kohaku’s arms.

“Now you be good okay,” Sango rasped between pants, but managed to pull a smile across her face for the last of her family. “The soldiers will show you where to go. After the battle’s over I’ll come and find you down on earth, okay?”

“Promise.” A little voice whispered

“Promise.”

Sango kissed her little brother on the forehead then sprinted away down the hallway to join the rest of her squad.

“Liutenant!” Sargeant Dietrich called out to her as she approached. “I just got a radio from Sargeant Kanzaki, he says the crabs are already trying to board us! The 7th Unit needs back up now!”

“Damn!” Sango unslung her pulse rifle and loaded a fresh clip in it. She took a deep breath and put on an enthusiastic face for her soldiers. “All right everybody its time for a brawl!”

Sango’s mind was a blur as they ran down the hallways, to help their comrades of the 7th Unit. The 7th were at the docking bay where their enemy was trying to board the space station. It was the goal of their enemy, the Zailuku, to overtake the space station and shut down the force field that protected earth, and judging by the Zailuku war fleet they came not to invade earth, but to destroy it.

To make things worse the United Systems fleet had been drawn away from earth by false information of the Zailuku war fleet being just outside the Milkyway, instead they had already entered the earthen solar system.

Now the Earth Space Station Marines were the only ones standing between their enemy and their homeland. It was up to them to hold off the Zailuku war party from overtaking the space station until the United systems fleet arrived.

Sango had been transferred to the space station the year before after suffering a knee injury during the battle of Cerrus, that almost cost her leg from infection. Six months after she had arrived at the space station she received a message that her parents who were medics on the frontlines, had been killed and that her ten year old brother was being shipped to his next of kin, her.

It was overwhelming to suddenly find herself put in the position of mother figure to a brother she barely knew. However, he was a good kid. He kept out of trouble, did as he was told, and after awhile became an errand boy of sorts for the marines around the station. Sango’s unit became Kohaku’s self appointed big brothers and sisters.

For a moment there was happiness.

Sango snapped out of her reverie as pulse rifle fire and the screams of men reverberated off the metal walls and wracked her ears. The intensity of it rising like a storm as they drew closer.

Around the corner came three soldiers, two of them supporting a severely wounded third between them. The wounded soldier was Sargeant Kanzaki of the 7th Unit.

“Where the hell have you been?” One of the supporting soldiers rasped.

“Looking for you!” Sango shouted back to be heard over the gunfire and screams. “Wachowski!”

The medic came forward and examined the wounded soldier. “He’s in bad shape, let’s get him into the room over there so I can press the wounds.”

“Are you crazy?! The crabs are just around the corner!” The other supporting soldier shouted.

“If I don’t close his wounds in the next ten minutes he’s gonna bleed to death!” Wachowski shouted back.

“Okay! Let’s get him inside the room!” Sango took control. “Wilkes! Start moving the men into position to support the 7th. Suzuki, Granson, Mencia, help get the room setup!”

Sango entered the codes to access the room. The door opened to reveal a rather grand office, that under normal circumstances Sango would have snorted in disgust that such a large room belonged to one person alone, but these were not normal circumstances, and there was no time to worry about such petty things.

Before leaving to join the rest of her unit and let the medics do their work, Sango glanced out the large office window. She could see the first wave of escape pods containing the civilians of the space station, starting their descent toward earth. The pods had shields built into them to deflect the force field and pass safely through.

Sango’s eyes locked onto pod “M-105”, the one she had placed Kohaku in. Her pupils shifted to the Zailoku ships closing in. Then the unthinkable happened.

Sango watched in horror as red rays erupted from the sides of the enemy ships. For a single horrifying moment her breath caught in her throat and her heart stopped, as one of the rays struck “M-105”, causing it to bloom in a cloud of fire and debris.

Then she screamed. It was a scream of pent up sorrow hate and suffering.

“KOHAKU!!”

***

Kohaku’s eyes snapped open. His heart was racing and his lungs seemed perpetually deprived of air.

He was having the nightmares again.

First would be a blur of monsters with guns and blood spilling all over the floor and all over him. Two people lay dead on the floor at his feet.

They meant nothing to him, they meant everything.

Then the scene would change space station and the people running and screaming, but then one calm voice would momentarily still the chaos.

“After the battle’s over I’ll come and find you down on earth, okay?”

Then he would be left with the crowd of strangers.

There was panic the air of an approaching enemy, the Zailuku. He held some sort of furry animal in his arms while he waited.

Suddenly it jumped out of his arms and scampered down one of the dark hallways yawning before them. Automatically he ran after it, but always he found himself losing track of it and completely lost in the maze of hallways.

But always he would get lucky, and run into Suikotsu. He later found out that before he joined the Shichinintai, Suikotsu was the medic of the 4th unit, the soldiers that had been assigned to help load the civilians on to the escape pods on the space station.

Suikotsu carried him toward the other batch of escape pods on the west side of the space station.

They rounded a corner and everything exploded in fire.

Kohaku splashed some water on his face, hoping to wash away the visions that danced in his fractured memory.

After an explosion from a Zailuku grenade had knocked him out, he woke three days later in a hospital with unable to remember where he had been or even his own name. The doctors told him he had dissociative amnesia, but being a child he had no idea what those words meant until much later.

He spent six months in an orphanage for children whose kin had been casualties in the war, before he was adopted by a good family. By this time he had recovered his name, discovered he was above his peers in math scores, enjoyed ancient fairytales and that he had at one time memorized the periodic table of elements, but still had no recollection of where he had been and who he had been with before waking up in the hospital, save for the strange and frightening dreams he had

The adults decided it was best for him to have him start a new life completely and try not to have him remember what happened, for it could cause even worse trauma to his psyche than the blissful ignorance of amnesia.

It for him, the dreams gradually disappated and he saw them no more, until now.

Kohaku had just graduated from college with a degree in genetic engineering and a minor in ancient folk literature, when he had been approached in person by general Kagura about the IY project.

Being young and foolish and having romantic ideas about changing the world, he immediately jumped on it.

That was ten years ago. Who could have known that even with the blood sample it would take so long to clone the youkai. Then after IY14 was born, who could have known Naraku would turn into such a sadist. When the news of IY14 escape had been related to him, he wasn’t sure whether to fall down and die at the hard work that was lost, or to jump for joy about finally escaping this devil’s work.

Kohaku stepped out of the bathroom and sat back down on his bed.

It was after the first round of “healing tests” conducted on IY14, that Kohaku’s dreams began again. It was the experiment’s screams of agony that reawakened the childhood nightmares he had tried so hard to suppress.

However, nothing enhanced the dreams more than seeing that Suikotsu was not a figment of his dreams, but a real, flesh and blood person, a person who remembered the events in Kohaku’s dreams, telling them they were not mere dreams, but fractured memories.

Kohaku rested his back against the wall and stared up at the ceiling, allowing his mind to wander. He wondered if those he once knew in his past life still lived, and if one day he would meet them...

***

“18…19…20…” Sango panted as she pulled her chin up to the metal bar for the last repetition.

It wasn’t working. She’d gone through her entire exercise routine twice over, but while her body was tired her mind was still wide awake, and still capable of dreaming if she went back to sleep.

This was not good. She needed to conserve her Prazosine supply, now that they were basically fugitives, she doubted she would be able to stop into her psychiatrist’s office for another prescription.

The pills helped to keep the dreams suppressed and Dr. Horton helped to get her social skills back on track so she could move on and not be a menace to other people or herself.

The dreams started again after Miroku had taken the job at the Shikon Military Research Base, where they had gotten into this mess in the first place. Apparently, being in the presence of soldiers, the sight of camo fatigues, the tromping of uniform steps, and the click of a shell magazines locking into place, awakened memories of the events leading up to her watching the escape pod in which she had left her little brother explode before her eyes.

An alternate method Sango tried to stave off the nightmares when the pills were not available, was doing exercise routines till she was so tired, she would go into a dreamless sleep. Unfortunately it did not always work, and this was one of those nights.

Sango growled and punched the button to open the door to her room. A walk around the ship would help…

Miroku strummed a few chords of Hans Zimmer’s “Earth Theme” to warm up his hands, more specifically his flesh and blood hand. He was absolutely determined to get his metal hand to play the “Flamingo Duel”. The duel was one of the hardest guitar solos ever to be composed. He was determined to play it to perfection like he had been able to do before losing his hand to the Kazaana disease. Unfortunately, his metal hand lacked the finely tuned motor skills his hand of flesh and blood once had, and metal did not grow more nerves with more practice.

In the meantime, he preferred to play his guitar alone, he could not stand playing sour notes in front of his friends, where had once flowed perfect tones.

As he strummed the last note of the “Earth Theme”, he became aware that he was being watched. He smiled as he recognized the scent of his watcher, but at the same time he wished to be left alone again.

“Hey, Sango.” Miroku said quietly. He turned to see the former soldier leaning on the doorway.

“I thought you had given that up.” Sango gave him a weary smile back.

“ No, my left hand missed it too much.” Miroku sighed.

“I’m glad, I missed the “Earth Song” “Sango came in and sat down next to him.

“So what brings you up? You only went to sleep 3 hours ago.” Miroku put the guitar back in its case.

“Nightmare.” Sango said darkly, watching regretfully as Miroku put the beautiful instrument away.

“Running low on your Prazosine?” Miroku’s brow furrowed in concern as Sango nodded her head.

“I’m sorry.” Miroku whispered, his hand moving toward Sango.

Sango watched him out of the corner of her eye warily. If he dared use this as an opportunity to grope her backside, she was going to break that guitar over his head.

He gently placed his hand over hers.

“I’m sorry...” He whispered again.

Sango stared at him for a moment then smiled and slowly turned her hand around so her palm faced his, then she gently wrapped her fingers around his…

AAAH! I just found this and I'm in love. But we're only this far-?! Nuuu! I'm really impressed by the many ways this parallels the series--and runs against it. Kagura deserves the chance to lord it over Naraku for once. Everyone has been very well developed--except Kagome. Will she get some good face time later? Maybe approaching Inuyasha to TRY to patch up their arguments..? Only to wind up with an equivalent to "SIT!"...? A girl can hope, right?

What's the best way to be notified when new chapters go up?

Oh! I'm so glad you like it!

I know Kag hasn't got a lot of screen time, another one of my ironies since she is the main character in the real Inuyasha series. However, she is going to play a much bigger role later.

I am going to be posting the chapters at the IY14 Fanclub as well as my page.

Great chappie, but do you know anything about advancements in fine biomechanical motor skills such as the hand nowadays? My guess, judging upon how fast research is proceeding, is that we should have fully functional and lightweight arms or hands within the next twenty years at least. I actually study this stuff because a character of mine has a biomechanical arm and the technology that goes into those things is fascinating. I promise this isn't a critique, I just tend to get excited when mechanical limbs are mentioned in anything.

Miroku = cyborg. COOOOOOOOL!

Update soon! Please? This story is addicting!

Wynterstoops In reply to Wynterstoops [2006-07-13 12:59:53 +0000 UTC]

Hey! They're trying that now, I just read an article not too long ago. I don't remember the species name, but I know it's this lizard that grows back it's arms and legs entirely without having any problems with the new limb. Personally, I would love to be that lizard for a while, just to see if I could actually do it.

Hee...Sesshomaru needs amazing lizard powers for his arm.

Poor Miroku, he's so poor....but cute...but poor...and adorable, can't forget adorable.

Kagura = COOL!

Project-InuYoukai14 In reply to Wynterstoops [2006-07-13 06:59:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know the speed of advancement in technology is amazing, but Miroku doesn't have the top of the line model of cyborg arms.

Also one of Kagura's goals for "Project IY14" is to isolate the gene for regenerating limbs, and applying gene therapy. First it will be tested in the millitary, then if it is successful it will move to civillians.

Good chapter. I like that there is more background stuff coming out. It's sad that both Kohaku and Sango are having nightmares about the same thing and neither knows the other is being tortured in the same way.
On another note, since Kohaku has been part of the IY project since the beginning, he would know if Inuyasha were a part of it, right? Say IY7? Theoretically?

last but not least, the pic is great. Kirara is so cute! (and a life saver too)

Even if Inuyasha was IY7, Kohaku hasn't met him yet. When Inuyasha's crew came around they were not allowed into the lab areas, which is where all the scientists like Kohaku are most of the time.

Yup. Kirara saved both Kohaku and Sango.
