I think the inspiration for the flies on the boy's face was from African children (poverty and lack of squirming away from small bugs) it adds a haunting touch to the picture and reflects the book. The characters may have been from wherever, but the idea of death and creepy are still in here and the book. A lovely piece of work

Lovely book, that, is this Jack Merridew? So good, and really brings the story to mind. But whilst reading it am I the only one that noticed that the pig was a girl when they chanted, but then turned into a guy when the head talked to Simon?

It's a grim, but poignant message. It reminds me of a frozen corpse (or made of stone) and the flies remind me of tears.

This is wonderful, I thought I saw something of Helnwein even in the thumbnail. You've definitely got a lot of 'you' in it too though.
