Description "He didn't know whether to escape or fly straight ahead.

Eventually he decided to fly over the serpent.

But he didn't get far before the serpent grew really big."

This is page 4 out of 7 of a story that my eldest son created when he was four or five years old. He made the crayon drawings himself; we wrote down his narrative. It is a story about courage, choices, and the unpredictable and complex world we have to deal with.

In this story, as in many other myths, legends, and fairy tales, the hero has to choose between a sensible but dishonorable retreat and a hazardous dash for glory. We can see here that the hero has created a dilemma for himself by claiming to fear nothing: retreat is impossible. On the other hand, it is equally impossible to defeat the serpent Ull. Even the Kurinians, who the hero said were worse than the serpent, are fading into insignificance.

The hero tries to solve the dilemma by flying past the serpent, but it's not going to be that easy.
