The scratch on his face already poisoned him, he was rushing to get this one-shot in on his foe before the toxins from the scratch completely knocked him out. but it looks like the armor did prevent any further scratches or jabs upon punching him.

This is correct. Also, a lot of the sudden weakness is from the large amount of xenosyncho he had to achieve to use the armor

It probably did, it's just that he was already poisoned BEFORE he used the armor.
You can still see the scratch on his face.
