This is a side-scene and won't be expanded on. It is meant to give an insight on what is happening with Zuko, and takes place at about the same time Toph is dreaming.

At the time I wasn't too fond of Maiko, being more of a Zutarian and all, plus I needed a dramatic plot-devise to explain why Zuko married Katara.
That and I'm not a very good writer...

Sorry for commenting a day or two late, I needed time to find the right words.
This page makes me very curious about what happened in the time between the last avatar episode i've seen thusfar and the comic.
It's also interesting to see you continue the story here, it makes it more intense to read as there must be a very good reason to suddenly 'switch decor'.

The decor switch serves two purposes, one is to introduce Zuko and how his life has changed, the other is a simple change of pace from Toph's scenes to add variety. Zuko will have a role later on, so it was important to situate him as regards to the plot.

That is one detail I won't expand on, this scene was simply to illustrate that they all went through hardships, and that things have changed drastically in the Four Nations. But I can tell you she's happily married

Is Mai's death in the script? Well, I just have an obsessive compulsive reaction whenever a story takes away a main character... or you just hate Mai you keeled her...

In this story both Mai and Azula are dead and Aang has vanished. I don't hate Mai, in fact I think her character development has been really great since book 3 started. Unfortunately to keep the comic at a manageable lenght I have to skip explaining why and how she's gone, and it's not part of the main theme.
