Exercising different art muscles, trying new ways to paint. From now on I’ll occasionally drop an excerpt from my current WIP—yes, an artist pretending to write a novel. Procrastinators, feel free to marvel at my utter lack of talent.

It was a dangerous and unpleasant work, not due the risk of falling down as Acumen first suspected, but of getting stuck in a chimney. The boys loved to scare her with horror stories of children who got stuck and suffocated, others who burnt to death when sent up flues still hot. They claimed children should no longer work as chimney sweep apprentices, the law wouldn’t allow it. Rored told a different tale.

The bad stories had the disagreeable habit of returning to her mind every time she was inside a chimney. The progress was painfully slow, and only the soot constantly falling over her head kept Acumen from proffering the colorful curses she recently learned. At last, with a final push of knees and feet she reached the top of the chimney, rewarding herself with a gust of fresh air before sliding back to the ground. The girl shook her head and wiped her face with a clean rag before allowing herself the luxury of opening her eyes. She stepped aside, giving Rored space to collect soot on the hearth.

If the height of the master sweep made it hard for him to clean the larger chimneys where fully grown adults fit, his more than fully grown waist made it impossible. The work always fell on Acumen and the boys, and when the flue was too narrow for them as well they were the ones who climbed the rooftops to throw sacks full of rocks down the chimneys. That was Acumen’s favorite part.

She discovered she wasn’t merely nimble. Acumen was a natural climber. She even took Scout as her name another day and applied herself to the task of using the roofs as an alternative way of finding her way in the chaotic city. It didn’t take her long to learn to move quietly and out of sight. For her dismay people were very vocal in their complaints once they caught the sight of strangers lurking on their roofs. That’s why later that day Acumen was puzzled to see a well-garbed youth sneaking just some roofs away.

This art piece has such a wonderful feeling to it, and I really really love your writing! It's fun to see an artist experiment - it really gives your work another dimension.

Are you planning on writing this idea into a novel? I'd love to see more art or writing of this world you're creating.
Great job, I look forward to seeing where you take this!

Novel! This excerpt is from an early chapter in the very first draft version.
I have an assorted collection of artworks related to it and other stories taking place in this setting here: vielmond.deviantart.com/galler…
Some are pretty old. I took years to gather enough courage to start to writing everything down. ;x

Oooh interesting story, you have my attention! What genre? I might be interested when it's done, depending on genre. There are a small handful I can't stand. (Specifically, ANYTHING romance driven. xD)

vielmond In reply to tamsinrj [2016-09-04 13:26:30 +0000 UTC]

Do I have your attention?! *freaks out*

It's fantasy. Despite some people falling in love in this novel I have no plans to introduce romantic relationships just yet, and when I do I don't want it to dominate the plot. I'm not very fan of romance either.

Except Jane Austen. She's a damn witty lady!

Fantasy, with no prominent romance? Oh you really have my attention now, consider me really rather interested in reading your story! Fantasy is my favourite. ^_^

I'm glad you like it! I'm not particularly good with gestures—or limbs, for that matter. Something technically accurate still feels wrong if it's not expressive, so hearing I managed to nail it makes me happy. (:

I find the notion of this floating unidentified on the internet upsetting, though. I certainly didn't just threw it in the wild without any linkback, so it saddens me to know some people ignore any appeals to not remove captions and feel entitled take it away to use... I don't even know. I only know they didn't like it that much if they do such things.
