Description I'm working on a commission featuring the Vanguard aliens created by  , and since he's one of the rare commissioners who gives artists tons of freedom there are many different interpretations of them - you can see them at his gallery. I thought it would be helpful to do a quick study of the head shape in preparation for the painting. I had particular fun trying to come up with how all four eyes would sit in the skull. In this version they've got both binocular and stereoscopic vision, which would really come in handy!

One of these days I need to sit myself down and learn Sculptris or one of those other 3d modeling programs.

Despite some blatant wish-fulfilment in certain other aspects of their design, the 4 eyes thing was actually something I thought through from a somewhat logical POV. What elements would the 'ultimate' apex predator have? We're a very visually oriented species ourselves so I figured that would make sense for an alien species as well - and 270 degree stereoscopic vision/depth perception would be a fantastically useful trait for a predator. Coupled with visual receptors in their retina able to see a little way into both the UV & IR wavelengths...

In our communication amongst ourselves we value being able to look one another in the eye, so this was is also a fairly strong cultural trait of theirs that I wrote into the novels as well - a lot of visual communication clues, primarily body language.

I very much like your take actually, with the front pair of eyes being more forward looking. Most terrestrial predators have forward facing eyes so that's rather fitting.

Rock on, Sir

Bot the layout of the eyes and a reasoning behind it sounds very familiar to my Raharrs, although in my case second set of eyes was for watching for another predators, since raharrs are not the apex predators on their home planet. Convergence evolution exist in fiction too, it seems XD

Heh, these days it's getting to the point where there is "no such thing as an original idea anymore" in fiction Co-incidences and conscious/subconscious duplication is the new normal, it's not always easy coming up with a truly revolutionary, unique concept.

It's actually always been that way. There is no original ideas. Everything is influenced or inspired by something else.
