This is not for people to try in real life. If you want to learn polo, go to a polo club. This is just for drawing referance

Urgh it had to be done!! >.<

Okay, with the new abundance of polo images WITH IMPROPER TACK , I had to make this tutorial to enlighten people who are getting into it through HARPG. I grew up playing polo and have played in both in Canada and Argentina so I think I know what I'm talking about. I also own a bunch of ponies and belong to a club and do play there and in tournaments.

So- there are numbers on the images and info.

1. Horses mane MUST be shaved (roached) or at least braided. This is the classic look of the polo pony and also a safety mechanism since manes get in the way when playing.

2. Horses ALWAYS ride in double reins. Why? Because thats how the polo bits are built- I will make another tutorial on bits next to explain more.

3. A martingale must be worn by all horses NO exceptions. The martingale is that thing that connects to the girth up to the noseband- this prevents the horse from putting its head too high and also for safety since when a horses head gets too high, they lock their mouth and you lose control- not good when you are galloping after 5 other horses.

4. A breast plate must but worn by ALL horses. Thats the thing that goes around the chest and connects to the girth. Its so the saddle doesn't slide by while you're riding.

5. Polo wraps, splint boots, and bell boots MUST be worn. In ALL the harpg pictures I have seen, only the wraps are worn. Thats bad because the wraps cannot protect by themselves. When a horse is galloping, 3 tons of pressure are put on each leg and if a mallet hits the tendon that means you probably can never ride your horse again. Splint boots protect against that. Bell boots are so the mallet, ball, and other horses do not hurt the cornet band.

6. Only wraps are worn on the back because all the action happens at the front of the horse.

7. The horses tail MUST be up! We use electrical tape so it doesn't pull the hairs. In Argentina they have a special method to tie the tail without tape. Its so the mallet or other horses do not get caught which would cause pain.

So now you know- I will now work on the next tutorial.

Hey CR666, I'm writing a manuscript (hopefully someday a book) which briefly features polo (one of the characters plays it as part of his horsemanship course) and I've done a lot of research on the history of polo, polo tack (this is extremely useful by the way!) and the rules but I have not been able to find much about how polo horses are actually trained. I was wondering if you could tell me what typically happens in a practice session and if there are any unique training things which are done, such as I heard polo ponies are accustomed to the mallet by it being hung in their stall. I am about to begin what is hopefully the final draft of the story, so I was hoping since you know so much about polo having played it you might be able to give me a tiny bit of insight into the training of a polo mount if you have the time.

Why are the harsh bits, double reigns, and tie down necessary for this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Villuminate In reply to SynBrittany [2013-01-26 22:03:53 +0000 UTC]

its just a regular pelham? No double bridle and no tie down. Double reigns because they are used for pelhams and are not allowed to use one reign. No other choice for high level dressage

I use pelhams at home and they are wonderful tools for horses who have had poor training in their lives, my percheron had poorly extracted teeth and a pelham is all that he likes, i basically never touch his mouth and only have it as a reminder. Of course, everyone rather use a snaffle or something lighter but high level dressage doesnt allow that. So this is the easier of the 2 options

The double reigns are incase one break...

Villuminate In reply to 8libby8 [2013-03-03 02:05:39 +0000 UTC]

Well actually in anything with double reins you usually use the top reins and only use the bottom for extra stopping power because its harsher- technically. That's why when you see dressage the top rein is tighter

SynBrittany In reply to Villuminate [2013-01-26 22:16:18 +0000 UTC]

*sigh*

A pelham is a harsh bit. There are tie downs and double reins on both horses in this image. Even the gag bit on the top horse has double reins. So, do you know why it's actually necessary, or not?

If I respond to you using that bit on your horse with bad teeth I'd be blocked... :I

Villuminate In reply to SynBrittany [2013-01-28 02:29:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh, for a second i thought this was a dressage pic *duh*

Polo you can ONLY use a gag or a pelham. Hell, i hate it too but thats whats the only thing thats allowed. It not a tie down (thats western and more harsh) its a standing martingale which makes sure the horses head doesnt go too high (mandatory for polo) my mare uses a happy mouth snaffle on the hunt field but is forced to use a snaffle gag in polo. I dont think it makes a difference to her really because the mouth piece it the same. Obviously harshness goes up on scale with the mouth piece itself (i have a double bitted gag). A lot of polo people abuse their horses mouths so even hacking they need to be in their polo tack but the horses with the nice soft mouths get a plain snaffle gag and dont seen upset with it or lose sensitivity. Of course, whatever works for the horse

This tutorial was extremely helpful!
I was asked to draw someone a polo pony and had absolutely no idea how their tack looks like, so I referred myself to your tutorial.
The result is this → [link] - still not perfect, I know...mainly because I suck at drawing tacks...

Thanks a lot for this helpful tutorial!

Actually you don't need a martingale. Nor do you need double reins. It depends on the bit you use. As I use a regular d rind snaffle. But it still is a great tutorial.

Wherever I play I have been told that if you don't have a martingale you can't play at all. Its been that way all my life but maybe different clubs in parts of the world are different?

And it looks like part of the bit is attached to the saddle?

Villuminate In reply to amour-interdit [2011-08-28 03:01:35 +0000 UTC]

Those are draw reins- they can also be used in English and not all horses use them. I didn't mention those because they are not needed but they add more control

amour-interdit In reply to Villuminate [2011-08-28 03:12:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh wait I think I see it now. They are part of the double rein set here. We use draw reins on our horses that think it's cool to throw their heads up when we ask them to do gait transitions lol. I had one colt that I literally had to use a bike chain type bit and draw his nose to his chest for one ride just to give him a bit of a bite so he'd learn that if he listens on the soft stuff he doesn't have to find out how bad the rider can bite back.

Haha my gelding never likes to frame and uses both gag and draw reins- still doesn't listen lol. My other guy has a polo martingale and a double bar double jointed wire snaffle lol

Wow that is a lot of equiptment, but I can see why it is needed. Great tutorial and I'm glad it's up so people can see it and correct what they need to.
I have been seeing a lot more polo images lately.
