Tortured Sisyphus, condemned by Hades for tricking Persephone to eternally push a massive stone up a sloping hill until the end of time: only instead of stone, he pushes a mass of bound souls. And every day, when he reaches the top of this dark hill, he has no choice but to release the mass of souls, and watch as it rolls back down to the bottom of the hill so that he can return to the bottom to roll it back up all over again. A very intriguing take on the original tale, as this gives a form of double torment: for Sisyphus AND the souls he pushes up the hill. His rolling them up the hill could stand as a metaphor for how ambition can lead one to climb to great heights while pushing on through tribulation after tribulation - but as long as the ambition is impure, it will weigh down on you, and bring you back to the bottom. Sisyphus was ambitious in using Persephone as a means to escape the Underworld. Had he not been so foolish as to underestimate Hades, and his ever-present watch over his own kingdom, he may have avoided his hell in Tartarus. Now he must forever pay the price for letting his ambition cloud his senses.....and no doubt did the same for the souls he rolls up the hill as a boulder.
