Description Commercially available turtle form (but have no idea where I got it), it's stuffed with sand. Beaded with size 11 seed beads using embroidery, brick stitch, and peyote. Design was on the fly, pattern original. The top of the shell flips up although it's attached at the top center. Top was completed first; underneath done later. Completed Feb 2006.

It's very heavy although it's small. Fits in the palm of my hand. A fun piece to do because I had to think on the fly while trying to figure out the pattern without a pattern.

that..is flipping...AMAZING!! I saw it on the DD on the front page and I had to see it bigger. I'm so impressed by the amount of beadwork on this, I can't imagine how one can do this. ...especially without a pattern. It's beautiful

your turtle is fantastic, it must have taken you along time to make because of the beads. I haven't posted any of my work yet, been too busy working. I sew, knit, cross stitch and some other things. Keep up the good work!!!!

Thanks Harmdavis! yeah, it took a little time, but it was so fun the whole while.

Do post your work, I've found everyone here at DA to be generous and encouraging to our art. I also sew, knit (easy things) cross stitch (although it's been a few yrs), crochet and generally do anything that strikes my fancy.

where did you get the matte seed beads for the skin?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vivage In reply to drowning-slowly [2006-06-24 23:45:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure they are made by Danica and I think I got them at a close out sale at a Joanne's superstore. They are actually very good quality, uniform in size. I wish I could give you a number or color for them but I no longer have that info.

I do jewelry so I dont really need skin tones , I'd just never seen matte ones and was kinda curious

You don't use any beads in your jewelry? The matte beads are fab with silverlined beads. Cool way to add texture to any jewelry.

Oh wow! I remember those turtles! They never lasted long with me, they always got a hole and the sand gradually trickled out. XD Did you sew the beads directly onto the turtle, or is this just a shell in the same shape? Either way, it's stupendous. I love the colors and all those beautiful swirls. The face reminds me of Cirque du Soleil, with all their fantastic and whimsical costumes. Lovely work, and congrats on the DD!

Thanks for the comments. Ya'll have made me giddy!

I did both, embroidered directly onto the turtle and did brick stitch that overlays the turtle: only connected to one another by each bead, not by the fabric. The feet are embroidered, the face is brickstitch and only connected at the edges. THe top is also all brickstitch and not connected except at the very top/center.

Now, if only I could find a place to get more sand filled turtles.

Ahh, very cool, very cool.

I've seen those sand animals floating around in places... I saw a bunch of sand lizards and dragons at a candy store in the Palisades Mall in New York. Can't remember if there were turtles, but you could probably find them in souvenir or gift shops, or even in catalogues. They used to be everywhere when I was younger...

I've seen lots of the forms in beach cities but dang, most of them are made of fabulous irridescent fabric and cost a ton. Although now that I think of it, maybe adding beads to add to the irridescence of them would be fun. Thanks for the great idea!

Weeeellll.... I DO have a few things screaming that they need to be covered in beads... And that tambour hook I've had lying around for a year has been asking for me to try again at it...
But how did you affix your beads? Did you couch them on?
