Description Dad's regular eye doctor had noticed a dark spot on my Dad's left retina. So I drove my Dad to the opthamologist (eye specialist).

He found the spot, injected dye into Dad's veins and took pictures of his retina. Then he displayed them on a 21" monitor, full-screen.

I did a 45 second sketch on a piece of computer paper on my clipboard, just to place the major elements of the image. For the remainder of the time, I studied the image to remember color values graduations, etc.

When I got home, I opened Paint Shop Pro v.7 and, using my reference sketch, created this image. Then I emailed it to my folks and Dad told Mom, "That's exactly what it looked like!"

Now my Mom thinks I should check out the field of medical illustrator!

Out of curiosity what WAS that black spot ?

Wowie it looks awesome from just a 45 second sketch pad !!! and the colouring is pretty damn accurate. though the retina wouldnt have such a smooth appearance, it would be not be so evenly pigmented. adn there definately would be more larger blood vessels arching around, and fewer number of the smaller & finer vessels branching off from the large ones.

all in all tho, impressive skills you have.

Thank you.

Dad had diabetes and didn't know it. As a result, the capillaries in his retina began to burst, destroying the retina as they did so. He has lost all central vision in that eye. He only has his peripheral vision.

When the problem was discovered, they used a laser to seal off the broken capilaries and stop the bleeding. The black spot is the result of that surgery.

They took a picture, then waited two months and took another to see if the black spot was growing or not. It wasn't.

This is weird, and a really interesting story... I like the image very much too. Not to advertise or anything but it's a funny cooincidence if you see the picture I drew right after I got hit in the eye with a very fast moving bouncy ball, maybe you can relate better than most people... [link]

Interesting image... especailly the screaming person in the upper left quadrant. Was that intentional or an interesting coincidence; the screaming person image, not getting hit in the eye.

When I first started reading the description, I thought it was the photograph of the eye, that you'd somehow smuggled home. But after finding out that it's actually an illustration, I must say... Very convincing!

Thankks! I'm tempted to copy it to disk and take it with me on the return visit, just to see what the Doctor thinks about it!

Woah, that's really cool! I'd be too lazy to recreate something so awesome. It looks really convincing - It looks straight from the doctor's office.

Thanks. It took about 20 minutes to do. I did it as soon as I got home, before I forgot what the colors looked like.

The sketch was just a quick circle for the outline of the image. two more quick circles to deliniate size & shape of highlighted areas. Two more shapes to show the solid and transparent areas of the dark spot, and sqiggles to show where the veins were located.

It was probably the quickest sketch I've ever done! I had no idea how long the image would be on the monitor. And I wanted to concentrate on the colors for as long as possible.
