It looks to me like they've just returned from a battle to deliver news of her to be husbands unfortunate death. Maybe he had told them to tell her just before he died and they came as soon as possible out of respect, hence the bloody sword. The guy on the left could be holding the to be husbands sword in a symbolic gesture, as if swords are traditionally passed from family lineage. The guy on the right is staying out of the way of his superior to allow breathing room for this upsetting message.
It's nice to have an art work that can be interpreted in different ways like this.
