Absolutely amazing write-up!
In the past, I used to really just focus in on the individual elements of a piece rather than the whole itself. I'd draw one thing, then move on to the next thing, etc. If they somehow mix well together, then that's good, if they don't, I'd just try to shimmy stuff around till they do. I had some hits and misses brought from this kind of tactic. Nowadays, I'm trying to move away from that process. Sure, not all of my pieces made now may be compositionally up to snuff as compared to other people's works, but I believe I'm getting there!
Colours and expressions are definitely two facets that I absolutely adore most about paintings, so I probably just naturally became better as they are usually the main focus in my pieces nowadays.
I agree that realism doesn't necessarily equate to better art. Really, the reason my style changed this much was most probably due to my influences changing. For example, in the past, although I didn't try to be as realistic as her, Sakimichan was definitely one of my larger inspirations. Nowadays, I focus more on artists such as Demizu Posuka for inspiration.
And yes, her skirt really did shorten... don't judge

By every piece of drawing or painting you do, you will naturally get better I believe, the only way to get worse at art, is if you stop all together or don't create anything for a long time. And I know that, how much you improve in a year depends on your dedication and especially how you practice (because drawing from imagination won't take you very far, whether your aim is nature scenery or chibi cats). But the most important thing is having fun
Haha, yeah, Sakimi was my inspiration years ago as well, but... her art changed quite a bit :/ I don't like it anymore xD The old pieces are still gorgeous though~ But, yes, one's taste in art changes and so does one's style. I drew manga girls with smooth lineart only 4 years ago xD I wonder what my art will look like in the future : P

Makes sense, though I do feel that there are certain elements in the changes from my past drawings that I could definitely label as direct improvements. 2016's levitating shirt, 2017's busy background (when it shouldn't have been the focus of the painting in the first place), and 2018's blocky right arm are some examples of this.
I do agree, however, that it's definitely more of my style changing rather than objective improvements.

Thanks!
I've been practicing on getting the colours right in tune to what I have always wanted them to be. I feel very proud right now!
