Interesting perspective with the tree in one corner like that, and the star trails behind.

This is very nice, I'm just wondering though, for the 25 min exposure did you use a remote and leave for a while or did you stick around the whole time?

NO, I don't have an ND filter yet.

Sorry to intrude, but you don't need ND filters for this kind of photography. They will only add to the exposure time, increasing heat on the sensor and hence generating more noise.
Your in the right path, just keep taking more photos like this one. Congrats!

Thank you. I know what I really need to do is take multiple photos with shorter exposures and layer them on top of each other. I think I need a remote that will let me do a set of timed photos.
The problem i run into is that if I take a photo with a 5 min exposure, it takes my camera 5 minutes to process the shot. So I'd have gaps of 5 minutes between each layer, if this makes any sense.

Yes, it makes sense. The thing here is that your camera is processing the shot on the internal cpu. More specifically, it is applying Noise Reduction to the image. I would recommend turning off NR to achieve the image stacking technique you're aiming for. Apply NR later in the computer.
Also, I understand that Nikon cameras that came before the D7000, have a tendency to eat stars with the NR that is applied in-camera. So, am sure you'll get better results by doing this process later.
As for the remote, yep! you need one. Nikon's inexpensive IR remote works great (ML3). You'll also need a sturdy tripod and to add counterweights to it to keep it still in mild wind conditions.
Keep me posted on how your shots come up without NR.

I'll definitely try it without the NR next chance I get. It may be awhile though. Winter has already started here and we recieved 18 inches of snow last weekend. I'm going to be spending alot more time photographing indoors I think.
