Description This was her first winter alone, and to say she was lonely was an understatement.

Every day, from the picture window of her parent’s house, she would look out over the rolling wintered hills, and she would think of him. Remember the moments where she had looked into his eyes, and felt the world melt around her, freezing cold yet still on fire.
She could still trace the lines on her cheek where he would always run his fingers across her face, smiling at her as if she were the greatest treasure he had ever come across. It confused her, but she couldn’t help but smile-even now- at how he couldn’t say anything when she confronted him about it. Only grin, and gaze at her as if she should’ve already known how he felt.
She knew. She knew, because he never ceased showing her. His sidelong glances and lopsided smiles let her know so many times in a day that the words ‘I love you’ weren’t needed- but the moments that he said them still crawled around in her mind and her heart, burrowing into the softest spots, and nesting there, reminding her of things that she didn’t need reminding to hold onto. It hurt her, and it healed her, and it helped her hold on at night when she hugged herself tightly in front of the fireplace, sitting in his favorite chair.
In the mornings, she would rise, and bundle herself within layers of cloth and fur, hugging his jacket close to her body as she walked to the top of one of those hills, and -long past tears- greeted him.
She would speak to him of her day, of the weather, of losing her parents, and of her memories. On occasion, the breeze would wind its way through the valley, caressing her face just as he did, and she would smile.

“ I love you, too.”

This was her first winter alone, and to say that she was lonely was an understatement.
