Yes, we did! I have pictures of it being eaten, but we only ate one layer! LOL. I took the rest to work and my co-workers ate the rest.

I have to give this to my friends. Well, 2 of them anyway. They can solve a 2x2 rubiks cube, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 and their 11! OMG Right? They even did that for a talent show! One of them did a 3x3 under 100 seconds.

It was a hard choice NOT to make a "scrambled" version, but it was for by boyfriend's birthday. He can solve the 3X3, 4X4 and this gift was the 5X5. I thought he would get suspicious if his cube went missing.
The entire cake was made from scratch. But for the fondant which was Wilson's, but I hand colored (kneaded) it to match.

Actually....YES! He would study the pattern and try to solve it in his head. Still, he was happy I got the sides the correct colors. White on top, yellow on bottom (the side it sits on.
Thanks so much for the feedback. I may consider a smaller version sometime. The one pictured uses 4X4 in pans, with frosting it was actually much bigger. He actually cut it as is! One cube was equal to one slice of cake, so I had a lot left over (6 of us) so barely 1 layer got eaten!

I used fondant, and then brushed it with eatable glitter/dust. I actually have progressive photos of it's entire construction from bake to cake which I can post if you like. ^_^
The Design is inspired by the silver/jeweled cube. I used gray fondant (hand colored) and silver/pearl dust. You can get it at most baking stores. DO NOT USE the Wilson brand. It doesn't show up or lay right. I used a private brand from a local store.

I think my sis used the pink glitter, b/c she had that problem (well, that, and having a fondat layer a half an inch thick!) when she tried to make a fancy cake for our parents

Yes, I can see that. I rolled mine out as thin as possible but with a generous amount of buttercream frosting. That is why it looks somewhat fat. If I had made the cream less thick I could have gotten sharper edges...this was after all my first cake. (Seriously...I have never baked a cake from scratch before.) I did a LOT of research before attempting this but am proud of the results...as you can see ^__^
