Description
Arni Arnason was born in Iceland in 1850. In 1875 he married Valgerdur Peturson and subsequently in 1889 moved to Akra North Dakota. In 1899 they came to Canada to homestead at N.E. 4-1-6. Arni Died in 1902 and was buried in the Icelandic Cemetery. They had one son Arni who homesteaded on S.W. 2-1-6 and Two Girls Sigrid and Margaret.This cabin sits at the edge of the valley and looks over into the US which is about a mile away. Based upon the condition of the structure it may have been the original house built by the Arnason Family.
(Please note a discrepancy ....the book Our 1-6 Heritage places Arni Arnason at S.E. 2-1-6, but the lands and titles map places him at N.E. 2-1-6. I have made the guess that the book has a misprint and that the map is based upon formal lands and titles records.)

This a testament to the durability of rustic construction; I don't think it would take much work to return this to livable, if primitive, condition. Neat project.

I seem to live in a world that is mostly white or brown...depending on the time of year. Summer is the only time with REAL Green and I tend to really enjoy it....but you know in about another month or so, the fields will be golden (brown) and the harvest will begin....then is is back to mostly browns until winter.

J'aime la façon ces regards de maison aussi, et aussi son emplacement. Le derrière me, comme je prends cette image est une grande vallée. Un côté, où la cabine est localisée, est Canada. L'autre côté est l'USA. Le sommet de la vallée est un enlèvement naturel, un endroit parfait pour la cabine et pour habiter aussi.

I don't think so Cindy, but I would bet that her grandfather and parents knew of the Arnason's because they lived only a few miles apart. However, as it is a cross border story, it is a part of the Between Friends Gallery.

Maybe, I am not really sure. But somehow the history connected with a place intrigues me. I know I have talked before on some of my picture comments about how certain places create a feeling or have a presence of being lived in...an essence I may have called it. I think that it is connected to that. The stories give more meaning and life to the essence that I feel when I am around these old places.

I agree. And, of course, the depth of what you're adding is a wonderful enrichment, not only to the photograph, but also to our general knowledge. We in the U.S. are amazingly ignorant about the settlement and life in Canada.

I sometimes wonder if the historical detail is appreciated, so it is very good to know your perspective. We in Canada are unaware of a lot of history too. Especially this kind of small (but important) on the ground family detail. The big stuff, th ebig people we may know, but the real life stuff gets lost.
