Description Summer time and just a spot of tea on the deck in grandmother's china. Could life be more perfect?

This is one of those images that takes careful measurement and dof calculation. The point of focus is mid way up the spoon. DOF was used to extend the focus to the current level. I used DOF Master and a ruler to measure various parts of the scene to determine the precise point of focus to obtain the DOF I wanted.

A 145 mm lens was required for the necessary angle of view and as a result a 20 mm extension tube was attached to allow it to focus close enough.

Skylight alone was the source of light.

Due to the low ISO selected and the high aperture required, a slow shutter speed was necessary. A wireless control was used to trip the shutter, thereby reducing movement or vibration.

A 30x40 inch print is possible.

The cup was my grandmothers. She collected them over her lifetime and gave them away before she died.

Lovely to see such consciousness in action, and how you've placed your focus in front of the cup to get a blur behind, despite the narrow aperture.

(I'm guessing that's what you must have done. )

WayneBenedet In reply to Mishkin-Rayman [2012-06-08 06:02:36 +0000 UTC]

yup. I had to focus mid way along the spoon, then calculate the DOF to keep the spoon fully in focus, but the tea bag and background out of focus. The high camera angle played a bit of havoc with the calculations because it changed the direction of the DOF from what it appears to be.

I like the delicate feeling of the shot. The tea cup and spoon have a old, classic feeling with them and inspire something calm.

As you well said in the description too, the shot has a wonderful perspective and the DoF is great. I admire how well you calculated everything.

I look forward to the next of your works!

WayneBenedet In reply to davincipoppalag [2012-06-05 19:35:26 +0000 UTC]

yes, they allow one to make the lens board parallel with the subject which corrects perspective and change the angle of the lens board to help align the DOF of the lens with the subject plane.

WayneBenedet In reply to undauntedifly [2012-06-05 03:02:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm thinking you probably can. You did one food shot (in your gallery) and you used a 6mm lens. People usually do that, use a lens that is too short. Next time you get a chance to take a picture like this, move back and use a 100 mm or even more if you camera will allow you to focus. Just keep moving back until the subject looks the way you want it in the view finder. (You don't need a lot of distance, this was was 3 feet away from the camera.)

Well, now all I need is a good camera! Currently I have an i-phone. Which isn't bad, but not quite the quality I want.

Indeed! But that is one of the things I like about it. Life is very fluid. At times for the best, at times for the worst. Always interesting though.
