Description I have placed this into the darkroom gallery because of the amount of work required to get it to look like this.

As some of you may have picked up, I visited Thunder Bay a while back, and except for one afternoon, I did not have time to do any of the shooting that I wanted, except at night. So simply put, I took advantage of what I was given.

This particular shot was taken from a overhead walkway over the rail yard at "West Fort". The lighting was poor and the dynamic range stretched the camera and my processing abilities. Hence, my placement of the image in the digital darkroom category. The image is being used in Thunder Bay to help reserve this building as an historical monument.

So this place is out of service? Are these railway wagons also abandoned? They don't look very decayed at least.

WayneBenedet In reply to MidnightMoses [2016-11-23 21:12:02 +0000 UTC]

Based upon the lights in the building, I would say that it was still in service. Β The rail yards around it are active, and are on the main line that crosses Canada. Β If I recall correctly, the intention was to tear down the elevator, but because of its age and style there is a strong movement in Thunder Bay to preserve it as a historical site. Β Because it is located on the river, larger boats cannot access it, so it's days are numbered in favour of other loading docks. Β In addition, there are now many inland terminals, so these large terminals in Thiunder Bay are not needed to the same extent. Β In many cases, rail cars are now emptied directly onto boats rather than having the grain stored first.

I really enjoyed taking this series of shots Jenny. Β I live in a small town, so there is not much night life. Β Thunder Bay is quite large and is a shipping terminal, so there is a lot of industrial activity

It was my first time that north in Ontario, and I must say I really enjoyed Thunder Bay. A beautiful city, though it has been hit with hard times lately and it is sad to see it suffering.

I grew up there.Β  Actually it was Fort William and Port Arthur back then.Β  I voted in the referendum that amalgamated and re-named the city.

When I left there were 106,000 or so people.Β  It is just about the same after 40 years (it may be 3-5000 larger but that is minimal, according to the 2011 census the city was 108,000).Β  They have vastly improved the road system since I left, and there have been many other changes, but the city's population does not really seem to grow, though the land mass gets larger and larger.

I still have a number of relatives there.

Worth the long hours of work!

WayneBenedet In reply to Kaleidopsyche [2010-10-25 21:35:39 +0000 UTC]

it does look a bit fake. My thinking here is that it is a combination of the camera as well as processing. CS5 does a very much better job of sharpening in RAW that CS3 did. Though I am still pretty new to the program, and learning the nuances. One of the things I noticed right away was the bridge was not as sharp as in CS3. I googled the issue and sure enough I was right, and there was a program adjustment that helped.

Kaleidopsyche In reply to WayneBenedet [2010-10-25 22:36:25 +0000 UTC]

I rather like that it looks "fake".

One of the many reasons I don't do much along the photo-manipulation route.

I played with the gamma a bit on this one:
[link]
Trying to make it look more like it did in real life. My camera has contrast issues.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WayneBenedet In reply to Kaleidopsyche [2010-10-25 23:17:13 +0000 UTC]

I rarely do manipulations, in fact depending upon your definition I never do them. I also tend not to use the exposure (gamma, offset etc) sliders. But I do like what you have done with the image you linked.

I do not change contrast in camera at all, preferring to do this in processing. I don't even do it in RAW, I tend to use curves. I do however use the shadows and highlights filters on most of my work. It tends to balance out the image so it prints better.

At first glance this actually looked like a Digital Rendering or Toy train set rather than a photograph of something Real. It's a really intriguing image for that effect as well as good composition!
