So this place is out of service? Are these railway wagons also abandoned? They don't look very decayed at least.

Based upon the lights in the building, I would say that it was still in service. Β The rail yards around it are active, and are on the main line that crosses Canada. Β If I recall correctly, the intention was to tear down the elevator, but because of its age and style there is a strong movement in Thunder Bay to preserve it as a historical site. Β Because it is located on the river, larger boats cannot access it, so it's days are numbered in favour of other loading docks. Β In addition, there are now many inland terminals, so these large terminals in Thiunder Bay are not needed to the same extent. Β In many cases, rail cars are now emptied directly onto boats rather than having the grain stored first.

I really enjoyed taking this series of shots Jenny. Β I live in a small town, so there is not much night life. Β Thunder Bay is quite large and is a shipping terminal, so there is a lot of industrial activity

It was my first time that north in Ontario, and I must say I really enjoyed Thunder Bay. A beautiful city, though it has been hit with hard times lately and it is sad to see it suffering.

I grew up there.Β Actually it was Fort William and Port Arthur back then.Β I voted in the referendum that amalgamated and re-named the city.
When I left there were 106,000 or so people.Β It is just about the same after 40 years (it may be 3-5000 larger but that is minimal, according to the 2011 census the city was 108,000).Β They have vastly improved the road system since I left, and there have been many other changes, but the city's population does not really seem to grow, though the land mass gets larger and larger.
I still have a number of relatives there.

it does look a bit fake. My thinking here is that it is a combination of the camera as well as processing. CS5 does a very much better job of sharpening in RAW that CS3 did. Though I am still pretty new to the program, and learning the nuances. One of the things I noticed right away was the bridge was not as sharp as in CS3. I googled the issue and sure enough I was right, and there was a program adjustment that helped.

I rarely do manipulations, in fact depending upon your definition I never do them. I also tend not to use the exposure (gamma, offset etc) sliders. But I do like what you have done with the image you linked.
I do not change contrast in camera at all, preferring to do this in processing. I don't even do it in RAW, I tend to use curves. I do however use the shadows and highlights filters on most of my work. It tends to balance out the image so it prints better.
