I was able to get some high-quality headphones with help from my brother online, specifically, the Sennheiser HD598 Cs model (assuming that's its name). A nice high quality (and expensive at I assume 200-400 Euro!), they do a very good job at blocking out outside sounds, perhaps too good considering how often I don't hear my parents calling me with these on. XD

This annoys the hell out of me. Fortunately we have some stores that carry the better known brands (read: Sennheiser/AKG/Audio Technica) but it's a pain in the arse when you want to audition some higher end or oddball stuff. Fortunately things like buying headphones is not a regular occurrence (because price), and I've actually taken to lining up my purchases with overseas trips to take advantage of the better range available to test in, say, Tokyo. Otherwise we have some decent local online specialist retailers here with good info and return policies.

I'm glad to hear that you have some local options that are decent- but it's too bad about the less common items. I've been frustrated lately with the selection of a lot of things that should be common but are seemingly unavailable. One example- I went looking for a less common, but still not that odd cable (USB to Mini USB), and when I went into the shop, there was no shortage of USB to micro in a bazillion colors, along with a few other standards, but not one USB to mini. I won't even touch on hobby supplies like pin vises and such.

Yes, that's why I try to rely on the experience of other users. I don't object to paying more if I get more quality.

Mmmhmm... I made the mistake of spending far too much for a pair of βtangle freeβ headphones a while back.. never had anything get more tangled than that cloth-covered cable (shouldβve read customer reviews)

Ugh, reminds me of my search for a TV. I did hours of research online to find a model that would work for my needs, but wanted to buy it from a local retailer to avoid the crazy shipping prices.
Low and behold, NO ONE sold that model of TV anywhere in my entire city. I had to drive 45 minutes to the closest Fry's just to find one that was sortof similar to the model I wanted, and then had to pay ludicrous shipping charges anyway ($100!!) because the box didn't fit in my car, lol.

Yeah, I had similar problems with little hobby items. I would think that a hardware store would carry things like decent calipers and files, but no, that's obviously outside their core skillset.
It's doubly frustrating because I want to support local workers and whatnot, but I can't just buy garbage that won't do the job, will marginally do the job but cost too much, or will fall apart.

Only problem with online is that you can't try them out. Sadly most stores only have crap that's overpriced like you said.

A lot of online retailers have good return policies, but if something doesn't fit me, I try to gift it to someone I know. I mean, I know it's good quality- so I just need to figure out who among the people I know it will fit properly and work for them. After all, I need to buy gifts for birthdays, Christmas, etc., anyways.
