Description You might want to download to get the full size image. It's a rather large vessel.

A massive mobile science station dedicated to planetary survey, and astronomical research. The" Far Traveller" class explorer is designed to be self sufficient and operate for extended periods far beyond support facilites. Equipped with laboratories, survey equipment, and the most powerful mobile sensing and imaging equipment possible. The ship can survey an entire world in months, and conduct a detailed cataloging operation detailing any biological activity, surface and subsurface features, and mineral, or chemical resources on or near the planets sufrace within a year.

The Far Traveller class is considered the pinnacle l of scientific research vessels. requiring years to construct and equip twelve of these vessels were constructed and nine remain in service. Two vessels. The "Far Home", and "Horizon Bound" have been lost. And the "Wayward Soul" has been retired to serve as an orbital University, after heavy damage from hostile fire, during an unexpected first contact incident, with a violently xenophobic minor race. the remaining hips still carry out long range multi-year expeditions into poorly charted regions through out settled space, and along the fringes of cataloged regions. The return on investment for the class has more than paid for the cutting edge systems, and highly complex systems required to create these mobile science stations.

The ships layout is straightforward. Engines and power systems are mounted at the rear of the ship to reduce interference with delicate instruments mounted in the ships forward section. Crew facilities, supplies, and hangers are based in the large cylinders amidships allowing the vessel to generate gravity for the crew by spinning the central section around its central axis when artificial gravity might cause unwanted distortions, and interference with experiments. The large Shield-like sections mount hundreds of optical packages, electromagnetic receptors, and a network of antenna which form a massive radio and x-ray telescope larger than any planet bound array.

The entire vessel is 2.6 kilometers long with a crew of up to 50,000 service personnel, scientist, and a large detachment of marines for shipboard security. It is powered by multiple fusion reactors, and has a drive system that can generate a constant one gee acceleration despite it's massive size. To increase it's endurance and provide both food, oxygen and green spaces aboard the ships several large hydroponic and fee standing aeroponic gardens are housed in the central section. Fresh produce, cultured foodstuffs, fish, and other foodstuffs are produced by the gardens, and a good deal of space has been set aside for indoor arboretums for the crew to relax in while off duty.

To ensure the ships survival in uncharted regions the vessel is heavily shielded from radiation, and electromagnetic frequencies that might cause harm. It's hul is heavily reinforced and armored. with a number of systems installed to prevent catastrophic fires, or depressurization.  Despite the fact the vessel is classified as a science ship, and has a peaceful mission. It is heavily armed for self defense, with lasers, particle beams, plasma weapons and armed drones, to repel any attackers. This refit was put in place after the near destruction of one of the class during an unexpected encounter, and has caused no end of controversy among the academic circles.

Each Ship of the class carries numerous smaller craft, shuttles, survey boats, and other  auxiliary craft. In addition a large store of probes, and automated survey drones are maintained for use by the ships scientific crew. the vessel can launch and recover several dozen drones, and survey boats in a short time with a dedicated flight control center directing activities and monitoring telemetry from up to two hundred drones at once.

The Far Traveller, flagship of the class, has been refitted for first contact operations, and now serves as a mobile embassy, and social/cultural/anthropological research station visiting worlds with sentient lifeforms that have not been formally contacted, or researched by earlier survey missions.  Of the nine ships in operation four have returned for refit, with the rest operating many light years beyond the commonly accepted limits of settled space.

NOTE: as of this time one vessel, the Distant Shores is reported overdue, and dispatch couriers sent to its last known location have reported no sign of the vessel its crew, or any message beacons left to indicate it's intended destination after leaving the system.  A search and rescue operation is being organized to find and assist the Distant Shores however it will take several months to depart, and nearly four months to reach the ships last known location.

creators notes: this is one of the largest most complex shapes I have put together. It started off as doodling with a small shape experimenting with several techniques. It sort of grew organically from a simple shape into what you see here. I did not do any write up on it's specifications, or game related mechanics at this point since I am still working up those facts in my head, and haven't decided on exactly how to go about fitting the ship out....in short it's BIGGGG, it's rugged, it has lots of people it can carry as many small craft as a decent sized carrier...and it has a LOT of high tech scientific gear on board.

I usually create ships for the Traveller Third Imperium setting of late, but  this one is a hard ship to wedge into that setting....but I'm working on that.

I have plans to use this as a set piece in a scenario based around the missing vessel. Although at this point it's still a very rough idea...stay tuned.

Created with Blender..it took about 8 hours to form the hull, and tweak it...
