Description
This bird has been causing quite a sensation among the birding community in my state. They are native to central and south America, and this subadult is only the second recording of one visiting the US. What brought him or her all the way up to Maine is a mystery.

I'd attempted to make plans to drive down to Portland to see this hawk twice but both had to be aborted for various reasons. Third time's the charm! The lighting was perfect, and the bird perched pretty much right out in the open and seemingly oblivious to the gawkers standing along the edge of the street taking pictures. My boyfriend commented that if he didn't know any better, he'd swear the hawk loved all the attention and was posing for onlookers!
