Description After a b/w photo by Herman Heyn in 1900.

Unfortunately I don't have any further information about the man. I don't even know which tribe he belonged to.

The photo seems to be very rare, because I couldn't find another copy of it browsing the internet. I searched for it because I wanted to show the reference but I can't link to the site where I found the original one - the URLs there are too long.
So, for those who are interested I uploaded the reference to Imageshack: [link]

Drawn in Photopaint using a Wacom tablet.

Original size: 2847 x 3543 px

High Bear was an Oglala Lakota headman and one of the signers of the 1877 Agreement with the Sioux Nation, Northern Arapaho & Cheyenne (other signers of that treaty included Red Cloud, American Horse (the elder) and Big Foot). His family lives on amongst other Sioux bands today. One of his descendents is Martin High Bear who passed away in 1995. Martin was a well known author and Sioux spiritual leader.

He might be Cheyenne. I should know, I was born an raised in the very town named for them, Cheyenne Wyoming, the daddy of em all. You really out to visit during "Frontier Days" held every year in July, the best damn old west celabration in the world. You should also visit Torrington, whare my dad was born. It was largly settled by German imagrents in the 1880s-1910s, from whom my father are decended.

OMG he's beautiful!! Instant with an extra for good measure. My eyes are just eating every pixil of it!!
You should really make more of these based on old photos...they could replace some of the rough images of them you see in text books and make the people much more memorable. It really does look like a real photo - I mean, look at that skin texture, and the beadwork on the headband! ... and the suede & clothes!! I'm so glad PSP had a link to your gallery It's made me a lucky lil' girl ~K
