...
In the early 90's I was still a pretty volatile person. Consequently everyday life was an adventure and not necessarily the fun and exciting variety either. I was on my way back from a few months in Minnesota on a Greyhound and we were between Livingston and Bozeman, Montana. The sun was peeking over the horizon behind us and the morning light illuminated the foothills we were driving past. I looked to my left and saw my first real herd of truly wild elk. It was early fall and the foothills were golden in the early morning light.

The herd was a good distance off so there was no pictures but it was an exhilarating moment. I still had a longing for MN then but the elk reminded me that the West was home now. Big wild country full of freedom and adventures yet to come. Interestingly enough in the mid to late 90's in another world for me really I was bringing my then new wife to Minnesota for her first cross country trip. As we passed through that same area (not the same spot) a herd of elk was coming down the hill to the fields. Just a subtle reminder that no matter the difficulty you must persevere. You do what you have to do then one day the dawn cracks and the sun is brilliant again.

I painted a lot of elk before my hiatus. If there ever was a wild creature I would call my personal talisman it would be the elk. Then again there's the Grizzly bear, Grey Wolf, Black Bear, Timber wolf, etc.... Who am I kidding they all mean something to me.

Looks great, especially the fur is nicely done. Although i think it could use a bit more light here and there overall.
