Description
Green Quake is a world in the EZ Aquarii system orbiting a gas giant which in turn orbits the two inner stars of the trinary system. The planet is wracked with earthquakes generated by the complex tidal forces. Since easily terraformed worlds are rare and very valuable its been terraformed and is inhabited. Earthquakes are a daily occurrence. 1 to 4 on the Richter scale go largely unnoticed. 5 to 7 are daily events. 8 to 10 happen every few months. There are very few buildings on Green Quake! Even sensors placed to study the environment need to be righted or re-set regularly.
The landscape itself changes daily as land and soil move like a wave tossed sea. Adapting plants and animals to the planet is a huge challenge so needless to say everyone in terraforming signed up to try. It was a red rag to a lot of bulls. (There are no actual bulls on the planet. ) Most plants are small, hardy with roots the stretch freely when stressed or repair fast if broken. Trees are rare and selected to grow on a raft of roots that floats on the moving ground. The fauna is dominated by birds, insects and some very hardy marine creatures. Those creatures that can fly take off in a quake and circle until its over.
The population are generally vehicle bound relying on big tires and advanced suspensions to cushion the shocks. Some use hovercraft skirts to further spread the weight and truly isolate the vehicle from the grounds movement. Most vehicles are long, wide and low so they don't tip over. The Jumbo Mobile home is used but often with outrigger 'legs' that can help keep it level.
The Desert, Shattered heights and the ice fields are too unstable even for ground vehicles. Fluidization of rubble/ scree slopes or desert sands mean sinking is a problem. Landslides make the Shattered Heights even hard for flying vehicles.
Some of the population live in sky steads. Winged airships with vertical take off capacity. If you want sea views this is essential, the tsunami seas has 60 meter waves crashing on shore. The Vulcanus deeps also have tsunamis but over deep water these are long low waves and rarely brake but they are still too big and bad for most sea steading technology except the Sub Stead design. This sea stead can survive submergence and avoids storms by sinking below the waves. Still while they are used, there's only a dozen often with a sky stead circling above for real comfort and safety.
Any colonist or android that venture far from the vehicles generally takes a jet pack. When, not if, the quake hits they can take off and fly to safety. Robotic fuel drones extend the range of these jet packs. The population of Green Quake have the nick name "Bonds", "Shaken, not stirred". A day without a quake over 6 on the Richter scale makes the news.
Green Quakes day length is rather random due to the complexity of orbiting a gas giant and having the far companion of the system add light at odd hours.
