Woooaaahhh.....Whisker, you put me to shame. I do completely digital images, WITH lines, and they aren't even in the same league as this beaut. XD *lotsa hugs and muffins* You should do some with lines too, it's much fun. X3

*hugs* I think it may just have been a little too ambitious for my first nolines digital painting...I may need to try again on something without wings. ^^
Thank you SOO much for the comment! *hugs and muffins*

*hugs* Thank you!
I've gotten so much good feedback on this one that I may give it another shot -- it's possible this one was so painful mostly because of the feathers. So I'll try a simpler one and see how it works.
^^ Thanks!

ooooh, you're quick.
And I have no idea how I managed to not be watching you. Sure, I don't normally watch human-esque art much, but it's not like you upload 6 pieces a day or anything. ^^ And you've been super-nice to me.

LOL, you think it makes that much of a difference? Two weeks of work as opposed to just a few hours? (not that I spent every waking hour of the two weeks on it, but it does take a LOT longer)
I like the feet and the tail. Everything else is kinda blah to me.
Though the eyes were a lot of fun. Maybe I won't mind so much if it's one without all the feathers! Gaaaah, feathers! and then markings on top of feathers! *explodes*
*hugs* Thanks, sis! *snugglehugs*

LOL, I know that feeling.
Basically I pulled that sketch into Photoshop and then added a new layer on top of it and painted on that. So I painted on TOP of the lines. Which meant I couldn't do big blocked areas and shade those like I'm used to. The feathers were the worst, because they were so long and skinny -- I had to block in the shadows on the lines, then the main color, then the shadows again, then the highlights, then texturize, then add the markings, then fade them a little, etc, etc.
For EACH feather! -foams-
Usually I can just block in the main color and shade/highlight that...with this, I had to be really careful with where my colors went, and how they seperated from each other.

try this next time..... selector tool, select area you want to color in and such.... make the sketch layer set to multiply, put layer below it color in do as you want, repeat for each thingor you want to do, when you're done toss sketch bit aside

I had a very similar thought when I was describing the process to someone else...there's got to be a better way. I'm gonna give it a shot. Sometime. Soonish. ^^

I did look at it! But it's a lineart-using tutorial, not a non-lineart.
Besides, I seem to have a penchant for doing things the HARD way, then finding a better way of doing it and using that. ^^

wilder [2005-02-02 13:19:31 +0000 UTC]
Did you color under the line art first? That's how I do mine - set the original sketch to "Mulitply" and turn the opacity way down. That way you still have the guidelines but you can also see "under" them ... that way you can fill in all the blanks that would have been left by the lines. And now I am rambling.
*ahem* OMG!!11! thats toooo kawaii! your awesome1!

ROFL.
Actually, I purposely colored on TOP of the lines for this one. I thought it would be a fun experiment.
It was a nice little sidetrip into hell, and not one I'd recommend for the faint of heart. ^^ *clings to her thick black lines*

well, yessum. i'd be glad to tell you all about it ^_^
first of all, the eyes are amazing. they look innocent and bright...maybe even a little guilty lol "i didn't do it...look how cute i am! *cow eyes*"
secondly, you're just on a completely different level of digital painting than most people i've seen. it's realistic but cartoony at the same time. the shading and fluff prolly make it more realistic-y than, say, my digital painting.
i L-O-V-E the fluff. i can tell you put a lot of effort into it, and it was definitely worth it.
i also love how there aren't any visible lines from the sketch - how do you do that? do you just paint over the sketch and just use the lines as a guide? do you use layers for the highlights/shading, or do you just paint them straight onto the pic?
i seriously think that many could benefit from some kind of tutorial on this style...the only ones i've run across have been for cel-shading...they help, but i'd like to see something a little more original in a tutorial, ya know?
eEenyways, i hope this was helpful!

^^ Very very much so! Thank you!
*fluffs happily*
The no visible lines was easy in thought, but difficult in practice. Normally, I'll turn the lineart scan layer to multiply, and color "under" the lines that way.
With this, I just put a new layer on top of the lineart and started to color on that. The hard part was that (naturally) the lineart disappeared as I colored. So I had to lay down my shadows to denote the lines, then put in my highlights (same reason in some cases), then the fill color, then the shadows and highlights again since I just colored over them partially so I had a good layer. Normally I'd have the shadows and highlights on seperate layers, but I was an idiot several times over on this one and didn't do that.
I had shrunk the psd so I could save the sketch lineart -- and then saved it that way. So instead of working at about 200%, I was working at 100%, which meant I wouldn't get any shrunken details, which are really good. I found myself zooming in to about 400% and using teeny brushes on some parts so that I could get in good details.
Neondragon's website has a really really good tutorial on this kind of digital painting. ^^ It's what Mearu uses. I haven't had a chance to sit down and really test it out, but I'd like to.
