Did you teach yourself how to draw dogs?

Sort of. For a long time, I was determined to do it all on my own. But after a couple of years, I realized I still didn't know what I was doing. So I looked at other artists around me and said "What is it that makes this look like a dog"
I payed a lot of attention to how muzzles are formed (using several different styles) and how faces are shaped. By looking at a lot of different styles and comparing them to actual pictures, I was able to get a vague idea of how to do it in my head. Same thing for anatomy.
Then I drew about five million heads and bodies trying to get them straight. I'm still learning (I have a hard time learning three dimensional concepts in my head) but I'm getting better! It's my hope that I have something that is fairly unique in style, and that I didn't copy any of the techniques from the artists I studied. Since they were all pretty well-known, and nobody's yelled at me, I must have succeeded. =]

Where did you learn these styles, muzzle styles, or canine anatomy? Because I'm really at the point you were at (but only drawing dogs for 2 years), when I do draw a dog it's extremly simple and when I try to make it look real I realize i have no idea what I'm doing. When drawing anime, I use a graph for heads and bodies, which helps sooooo much but I've looked and never seen one for dogs/any type of canine.

By looking at other artists that I admired and by looking at reference photos. I broke them down to their basic parts -- circles and lines, and went from there. Some artists, like daisy7 and thornwolf, offered tutorials that really helped as well.

Well, if you're trying to get practice with your paint, do it in that! =] Yay for more practice, neh?

*goes off to brush her teeth to get rid of the bad decision-making taste*
OH! And if you'd like the original colored pencil piece, note me with an address. May take me a while, cuz I'd have to get a bigger envelope and take it to the post office to get the right postage, if if ya want it, I'll send it. =]
