Description Waves - Hayden Calnin

I just started doodling tonight and a random mermaid came out of it, so I tried out a lineless coloring style. This took about 1.5 hours in Krita. I have decided to call her Rurasa for now.

Love the monochromatic colors and the flat almost lineless style. Rurasa suits her!

Thanks! I've been thinking of drawing a few of her sisters eventually but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I love the nautical feel you gave her with the netting for clothes/jewelry. Beautiful Β

Thanks! Fun fact: the netting is woven from mermaid hair (from her, her sisters and her mother), so it doesn't deteriorate in saltwater the way that string does over time. ^__^

That's really cool; I never knew hair could do that.
It would make sense that they'd want to use the material that would last the longest.

I think mermaid hair would have natural resistance to water damage.

Wow this is pretty I love the fishnet clothing, it certainly feels appropriate XD

Thanks! There are lots of materials that can be used to fashion some form of underwater clothing/adornment. I just wanted to do something beyond the stereotypical "seashell bra."

Well I'm glad you did I've certainly had enough of that as well

Well she's cute. Are those fins or like little leggy bits sticking out on the sides?

I was trying to repeat the pattern of the webbing between her fingers by adding those side-fins. They undulate in a motion that makes them not too different from legs in effect (such as those of a centipede).

Huh okay. I figured they were fins, but a lack of shading made it a little confusing. I'm no 2D artists but I guess as an audience member I can at least convey confusion and report on how it "reads" so to speak. How to fix it, I guess shading? I wouldn't know that too well TBH. That's why I try to avoid criticism on 2D art.

Thanks for the feedback. I wonder if perhaps it's the color of the darker fin membrane that is throwing you off. Not sure how to fix this either but going forward, I'll keep it in mind.

You're welcome.Β  Honestly I think it's just the lack of shading. This was just a quick sketch right? I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I like her. RurasaΒ is a nice name for her too. I'm guessing she's got a bit of shark in her skin tone and design.

Thanks! I had more of a dolphin/fish hybrid in mind while drawing her; I always liked the idea of mammalian merfolk because it makes more sense for them to have hair and such.

You're welcome. I always wanted to see people experiment with drawing mermaids in a more fish kind of quality comparing to the usual way we draw them.
