The one on the right is really nice and modern. But is she wearing a floppie cap on top of the scarf or is the scarf done in a type of turban style?

It reminds me of the Rastafarian cap/hat but these styles are called beret. Well though, they are really good ideas. You never know, might just end up seeing them in actual fashion.

yeah !^^ i've done a search with names you mentioned that's exactly the idea ^^ i would really love to see my designs realized someday even when i do characters for something other than fashion i focus on the clothes more than anything else!^^

Madi-Q In reply to WhiteLeyth [2011-05-02 20:33:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, you've achieved one part in coming up with good designs coz that is important. But you need to understand the importance of character over design. If you have a brilliant but a weak character (personality) then it won't appeal to people. When it appeals to the audience then they want to imitate it. If you really want it to be seen out there then have strong characters.

But one needs to be careful of how we commercialize religion and religious things. Commercial things loose their values eventually. And then there's the danger of offending someone, somewhere. That's one of the hindrance I have while writing my story.

yeah you're right!^^ i've noticed a long time ago that i'm doing this mistake .. i just love / i find it easy for me to do fashion designs that's why i focus on it ..but now when doing characters for something else i do my best to give them personality as well as a good costume designs and accessories ^^

i agree with you about the second point you mentioned !^^ for me it's a matter of intentions ! my intention by doing these designs for example and other ones i'll try to do in the future inshalah is creating designs that follow modern fashion and in the same time follows the maximum the rules of Hijab if i dont say totally ,which means more women will be attracted to it i think... and that's benefical for muslim community !and so my benefit is being rewarded in the Akhira inshalah for doing something good ! that's my first intention !^^..and after all fashion designs are usually done to be realized dont you think ^^

Sorry if my grammar is all over the place and makes little sense. Had a few more of my grey matter cells fried at work today, lol!

I think that the love/interest of something keeps us going and no longer seems like work. So basically we're not working, we're having FUN!

Mixing the fashion with the religious needs I think is an excellent idea, and hope that Inshallah it will become a success. I'm trying to do the same thing as you with the same niyat and will be happy that they are embraced by the muslim community at least. If others accept as well then that will be even better. We DEFINITELY need muslim characters. Having studied these things I understand the importance of having those types of characters. So, don't ever give up!!! I'm now expecting to see your designs out there!

What do you do first when drawing a character, design the appearance or come up with the personality? Which style are you going for, manga or marvel/DC?

the first thing i usually do is drawing a silhouette of course^^ i think learning anatomy is very necessary to get good silhouettes and so good characters! and of course learning to draw the human body doesnt mean always drawing real models !^^ personally i love to learn that from other artists works ! and here is an example : [link]
(links to his other threads are in his signature^^)this artist is a source of inspiration for me!i spend sometimes an hour or more observing his works !
anyway... after this it's hard to say what i exactly do ..thoughts come to me instantly !i usualy dont have a clear idea about what i'm going to do..i just think about a very large idea for example: a little girl who seems like a genius with white hair! the idea stops here i dont think of any other detail!i just hold my pencil and start with the silhouette and then the ideas come instantly as i said!^^
but how i'll make it look genius (i continu with the same example)? simply again by getting inspiration from other artists and how they do it ! it's like a mall !^^ you go for shopping in a website you take the haircut of a character, the eyes of another one, the pant of another one ....etc and then you give it your touch with something from your imagination!
i'll continue my reply later ! i need to go to sleep right now!^^

Yeah, the anatomy is a very important part of comics and animation but not necessarily so for fashion as this has less to do with accurate body proportions and more with designs etc etc. But even with com/ani it depends on the style as well but knowledge of anatomy drawing does help. Nah, I haven't done life drawing classes either. Never believed that I HAD to learn anatomy drawing by looking at a nude model. My tutor at that time tried to emotionally black-mail me and called me a "fundamentalist" when I was asking for advice on an alternative..... But I stuck to my decision, alhamdulillah, and found that with practice, practice, practice and observation and constantly going back that I found that not only was I improving but also I could see faults in my own work and where i needed to improve and how. I am absolutely happy that stuck to what i wanted, . Personally I think that you can use real models as well (if you meant that you were avoiding them) but I think that they do not have to be nude. I've actually found that though studying other artist's work helps it's not as beneficial as having your own personal reference as one requires it and how you need it to pose. Plus there's a danger of the drawings looking flat. I've found that an artist's mannequin make a huge amount of difference.

That link is an eye-candy !!!! I've gone through a little bit of it but there's another site www.thenamelesspage.com with loads of lovely links (including the one you had sent). I just love looking that the artistically gorgeous stuff some people come up with but at the same time it depresses me as I start to crave their skills without going through time and practice. Just to stop that inferiority complex I've had to keep my self from looking up the deviant watch, my poor inbox is now protesting at the amount of stuff that's just added up. Don't you find it the same when looking at the professionals' work? The bold strokes, the freehand straight lines..... Though I have to say it that I absolutely love it when the professionals, after all their expertness, make the silliest mistake. I know its a horrible thing to say but it just makes me feel better that "Yup! They're human as well. So I can make it as well and be as good as they are now".

If you are just going for designing costumes only then yeah I suppose that will work as well. But I usually find that I think up a story and personality and the costume designs evolves in my head or even on paper. Each person has their own approach to doing stuff which suits them best. The professionals are usually shown as coming up with ideas, leaving it for a little while then coming back to it to develop it again and again. But for some reason I have never been able to do that. I think about it, sort of just pops into my head and then a version of it comes out onto paper but up till now I haven't seen the need to "develop" it. I guess if it does then that just happens in my head, never really on paper. Do you find that be the same with you as well?

first sorry for my poor english ^^
i think you're right ^^ i was talking about comics, animation, concept art ... since you asked about "characters" but as you said anatomy is not really necessary for fashion design ...and you're right too when you said that we can always use real models but they dont have to be nude ...but i think it might be more useful for gesture studies you know since you cant really know exaclty the shapes of the muscles for example if they re covered ..
i visited the page you gave me !! wow it's full of interesting links ^^ thank you ^^
actually when i look to professsional pieces of art the thing that depresses me is that if someday i reach their level they will still be far from me if they dont stop working !^^ so that makes me wanna work so hard to reach that level ! and amazingly i fall in love with every new piece i do and i also feel imrpoving very well ^^

actually when i wanna draw a character most of time i just dont think about anything ! i just start sketching and the ideas come instantly as i said ..but i usely work like that when i just wanna sketch !^^ but sometimes if decide to spend a long time on a piece i start with searching for ideas in my head! then i start working ..but i usually dont come again to a pide and develop it !maybe i search in my old stuffs and i redo some works just to test how i improved!^^

i forgot last time to answer you about what style do i prefer ...i say manga style ^^or magnga styles you know from the cute little characters ^^ to the ones with the realistic proportions ^^
