patience lots of patience and studying how the fur moves. If you look at my older art you can see the change in tecniques and how much more patient I got with the drawing

In my oppinion this is definitely the best i've seen of your work.
The muzzle area looks great and the fur is definitely improved from other pieces.
You could still use a little work on making the fur look less grainy/fuzzy though. If you get what i mean, i can't really think of how to explain it.
Keep up the work!!

thank you!
hm... do u think its because my pencil isn't sharp enough?

d-e-a-k-i-n In reply to WhiteTiger22 [2008-09-21 02:01:01 +0000 UTC]

That could be it. Keeping a good sharp edge on the pencil definitely helps keep things looking clear/sharp.

lov it... it has a lot of indivitual depth of still action... makes one view the whole pic slowly... that's really a great work...

Looks great, good to see new work from you I really like how you did the fur, and great work on all the detail. The only thing I would change about this is the background - I'd leave it white, or very, very lightly gray. That was there's be more contrast to the picture and the jaguar would stand out more. Otherwise it's an awesome picture, really

hmm... the main reason i did that cuz there was some white fur stickin out but yeah i could have made it lighter

babydragon11 [2008-09-05 20:59:41 +0000 UTC]

Looks amazing! I suggest filling in a bit more. the white streaks through it mane is looked rushed. That may have been the little problem all along! But, yeah, you should be able to still keep the for texture and just fill in a bit more. That ok?

WhiteTiger22 In reply to babydragon11 [2008-09-06 13:05:57 +0000 UTC]

hm... well i did that to show its lighter up there mostly its my printer's falt it deleted allot of my hairs like on the chin and on the cheek plus yeah it was a little rushed

thank you
tis ok^^ u dont have to if u cant find anything
pencils as in brand or scale (7B, 4H ect...)?
i use like 3 different brands i mostly use Dewent graphite
scale i used i think 3B for the fur and 9B for the spots

feed-me-a-stray-cat In reply to WhiteTiger22 [2008-09-05 00:05:01 +0000 UTC]

I love 3B pencils! yum. I use mechanical pencils a lot more lately, they're really good for getting small details and you always get clean lines and don't have to sharpen

Oh i found a small critique! Sorry for the excitement but I was looking at it for ages to find something for you, shows how good it is really

Some extra shading in the fur would be good next time, like where the shadows are, you've done it a bit in this one, but not too much so it looks slightly less 3D. But looking at the ref used it's a lot darker near the bottom of the jaguar, where the shadows are. Hope that helps

lol i see what u mean
ill make sure ill add more shading to make it more 3D in the next on
thanks for the help^^

You did pretty well on the fur and it's patterns... I can't put my finger on it... but somethings a tad off with the hair, but like I said, I can't figure it.

I noticed that you omitted the white hairs on the cheeks and some from the eyebrow patch, was this because you didn't plan ahead or didn't want to because of originality?
I was only curious because if you felt you couldn't do it I have a really neat way to make those hairs stand out so you don't forget about them while you're working.

Take a dried out pen and put your piece on top of something like a stack of papers or a magazine so that way you can "carve" those white hairs in before you start with the rest of the hair, that way, it's harder for the pencil to get into those grooves. Hope that helps you for later projects!

thank you hmm.... i cant figure it out either
i didnt plan ahead and then it was smudging and i tried to erase it and it didnt...
thats a good idea evcept i draw in a sketch book so i i do that it will mark through and leave an indent on the next page

TheRaptor-Wolfy In reply to WhiteTiger22 [2008-09-04 21:57:46 +0000 UTC]

I take it it's not a sketch book that you can take the pages out of, it's probably one of those really nice bound ones. Well, I and as you saw, *feed-me-a-stray-cat and I were talking about that eraser pencil.
I can't remember the rate exchange either. Hee hee

yeah! they sound like its exacly what i need!

TheRaptor-Wolfy In reply to WhiteTiger22 [2008-09-05 05:45:15 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.... well, You could still probably get away with sticking some computer paper under there... like... 5 sheets, maybe more and do it my way, and with the empty pen it's not likely to tear up the paper. But, I still want one of those pencil erasers.

feed-me-a-stray-cat In reply to TheRaptor-Wolfy [2008-09-04 02:36:04 +0000 UTC]

I find just simply erasing wherever you want the lighter parts to be with a kneadable eraser to be easier, then tidy it up with your pencils. Plus that way you don't damage the paper

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheRaptor-Wolfy In reply to feed-me-a-stray-cat [2008-09-04 03:54:30 +0000 UTC]

I've never had very much luck with the kneadable eraser, I can never get it that brilliant white that everyone else seems to get... so this was the easiest I found. Got any ideas as to how to get it that perfect white?

feed-me-a-stray-cat In reply to TheRaptor-Wolfy [2008-09-04 04:00:16 +0000 UTC]

I bought one of those eraser in a pencil things! They're really good! Except I overused one once and it completely ate my paper .... <.< Serves me right using the hard end. Mine's a faber-castell one, but I think there must be loads of others too.
Just in a pencil so you can sharpen it to a point and rub away I'd recommend one of those if the kneadable ones don't work for you I use both personally

TheRaptor-Wolfy In reply to feed-me-a-stray-cat [2008-09-04 04:06:16 +0000 UTC]

I think I know what you're talking about, now, the erasers that come in the pencil things, are those kneadable, or are they tough so your can cut them down and such? I think I have a really cheap kiddy one that I use on stuff that's not important.... I've always wanted to find one with a quality eraser to it...

feed-me-a-stray-cat In reply to TheRaptor-Wolfy [2008-09-04 04:26:43 +0000 UTC]

This is where I got mine, I got it when I bought my polychromos from there. [link] It's only £1 I think and it's really good. Has two ends, one fairly soft rubber, and the other harder (the end that eats paper XD ) It's just rubber in a pencil, like instead of the graphite? So you can sharpen it in a sharpener and use it like a pencil but its a rubber 8D
If you go back to the rubber page on there they have some kneadable ones for sale too

feed-me-a-stray-cat In reply to WhiteTiger22 [2008-09-05 00:03:46 +0000 UTC]

I think it's roughly 1.6$ to every £. So it'd be about $1.60? Around there, I dunno.
I tried to search for them on a site that is based in the US, and I went to the faber-castell website and found this [link] You get two here for $4.95 They're not double ended though, so I think it's just the soft side you get on these.
