Description More then 10 years ago (could very well be 13 but I'm not sure) I drew The goblin king
I have never redrawn a drawing but as a tribute to David Bowie, the one that blew life into him, I tried and I think it worked out pretty well

I love that cubistic style! Also reminds me of some Chagall paintings. And atmosphere, wonderfully oneiric.

How do you create such wonders infused with magic?

Do I infuse magic?
that's one of the greatest compliments I had.
And uhm for how,
well, I think of creating as something magical.
When you manage to tap in your subconscious and manage to conjure something from it

This is a beautiful rendition to the character and the person. Β I love the sculptural aspects of the shading and the luminosity of your palette. Β In particular, the forms of his face are so striking to me, but I also like the subtle shapes and forms of the labyrinth and his crystal orbs. Β Wonderful piece!Β

Whobleyh In reply to ThermidorResistance [2016-05-09 01:25:57 +0000 UTC]

Although ofcourse it is obvious what is the main subject;
I tried to make the whole painting, all the aspects reacting on eachother.Β
Didn't want it to be just a person and it background.
So I'm glad to hear that also the shapes and the forms of his surrounding are working well for you
Very glad you like it and thank you for the comment

Whobleyh In reply to KanahaniART [2016-01-31 15:36:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you KanahaniART, good to hear I improved
I know people liked the first version a lot and I wondered if except for better technique,
I also could capture the same kind of feeling .
I think I did and with the reasons for the redrawing even some more

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KanahaniART In reply to Whobleyh [2016-01-31 15:42:37 +0000 UTC]

I prefer this one because of better coloring and more dynamic feel. Also the old one is more realistic and here we can see more of your own style which I like.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Whobleyh In reply to KanahaniART [2016-01-31 16:11:18 +0000 UTC]

I have figured out a tactic recently which makes me having more of a conversation with what I'm making.
Triggers my instinct and inspiration and lets me look wider then how things are supposed to be (not nessecarly realistic)
Not that I never have those things guiding me but it's easy to get lost in end results, what to make, what others think and not having fun.
So I'm glad you recognize more of an own style Β because there is a lot of Me! in it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KanahaniART In reply to Whobleyh [2016-01-31 16:43:51 +0000 UTC]

It's bad when it comes to thinking "what others think about that?", I know that feel, it's demotivating in most cases
By the way, do you want to share your tactic with me? Sounds interesting I'm often suffering because of lack of inspiration and drawing "just so" without thinking about all stuff like "is this right?" or "are the proportions exactly like it should be to make this composition look good?".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Whobleyh In reply to KanahaniART [2016-01-31 17:53:42 +0000 UTC]

It indeed is a bad feeling, takes away the essence of why I draw.
And sure I guess it won't work for everybody but seeing your work makes me think it could work for you

I start with choosing a colour to set the mood and I just drench the 'canvas' in it.
Then I use a bit darker shade of the colour ( maybe a bit mixed with another to get a bit more contrast)Β
and I go fiddling around the page making some shapes, clouds so to call.
I use a brush that's pretty smooth and covering but is still able to get a good difference in pressure.
Also I use big brush sizes at the starters and won't let myself be seduced to making them to fast to small.
I can have already a bit of subject in mind or none but I just let the shapes that come to life do their thing.
I then use a bit lighter shade then the original and again maybe a bit offtone, the developing image kinda tells you too
Then I just keep drawing, reducing the size of the brush bit by bits and I pick shades with the colourpicker around the canvas,
so the strokes always feel at home at the canvas.
Then at some point the canvas will ask for some harsh details most probably and then i just pick the darkest tone and make it a tiny bit darker
and I draw them just to then gently brush over them with a shade of the area so they merge.
Same for lighter details after that.
All of this I do in one layer.
Sometimes I just make an overlay layer and use a very transparent brush to make some parts of the painting a bit more intense
and maybe add some colour tones to make the whole picture more lively.
So basicly you make and watch your own clouds and make the shapes that you recognize come to life

Hope it made some sense

KanahaniART In reply to Whobleyh [2016-01-31 20:36:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh I tkink I heard one about this technique. I use something similar when I'm doing background (because there's no sketch that I did before where I keep my anatomy right etc.). The only difference is that I'm putting a lot of colour into it while I'm working because it's hard for me to give a painting some interesting colours in the end. Maybe I should try it with characters too. Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Whobleyh In reply to KanahaniART [2016-01-31 22:26:31 +0000 UTC]

You kinda sketch at the same time as you are creating ye
And the amount of colours you use doesnt matter I think, it's mostly about the tones.
The good thing of using the technique on a whole painting is probably that you wont seperate the subject and
the background.Β
